A Far Distant Cry

.

We’ve come full compass, the year and I,
in this new southern land. This solitary planet
has once again turned and tilted on its axis,
offering this brief moment in time, suspended
between seasons-- a gilded line which parts
the glow of summer memories
and the gathering autumn.

Fragrant wood smoke envelops my senses
and the conflagration of colors blaze
against a blue paper sky; vibrant golden light
caresses my hair and perches on my shoulder,
beckoning something deep within.

A sound of muted trumpets rise and fall
as winter geese wedge themselves
through sharp, cut-glass air
all the way to the horizon,
a vanishing point, leading north,
to the land of my birth.

Oh, the sight, the sound fills me with such longing!
How I ache to let loose wild, wishful wings,
feathered in fiery leaves,
allowing the wind to take my body, to sweep
my lonely spirit up and away, following them
along their ancient migratory path,
toward home
and the hushed notes
of a far, far distant cry...

Eh...he..... *reads poem over several times* Wow....This was just....awesome....literally, I am in awe. You pieced the words together so carefully and with your select choice of words, you painted a beautiful image that I think I could actually smell and taste for a while there. And yet you made it almost like it required no effort at all. *sigh* Man...if I could ever produce something as beautiful as that. I can't wait to see more of your work. ^_^

Sandy! It must be getting really pretty right about now, in your 'neck o' the woods'!! I miss the vibrancy of colors up north-- in the south we tend more to the deep reds and bronzes...

    Thanks for your thoughts, dear!

Serenem, your yearning voice shines cleary through the flight of geese and it's so lovely to read your thoughts of autumn. This is very beautiful. Good luck in the contest.

I have to agree...if this were spoken to one who was blind they would be able to get a beautiful image in their mind from your beautifully described scene. Makes one have a sense of peace from reading, and open for the reader to put themselves in the main character position. After reading this I wanted to go outside and fly to get that feeling of freedom.

They say that you can't go home again. What I believe they mean is that it's never the same as you remember. Perhaps that is because we build up expectations and cling to them as a shipwrecked sailor clings to flotsam. The geese, on the other hand, do what they do because that is the only thing they can. Theirs is a simple outlook. No expectations. No living in the past. No second guessing. No disappointment. Wonderful poem filled with yearning. So visual that by closing my eyes I could see their V-shaped formations undulating across the heavens...
