Give to your Children

Missing image
We sit 'round the fire
with lovers and friends,
thinking of good times
and places we've been.
Yesterday's moments
just a frame in the film
and the time it passes on.

Our children grow older
and soon they'll be gone.
To seek out the future
and carry it on,
they'll reach out for wisdom
and truth they can find
in the lifestream
that carries them on.

So give to your children
all you've got while you can.
Give 'em all your lovin'
and reach out your hand.
For tomorrow
they will be gone
and you will wonder where
have the youngsters of yesterday gone.

Now the children are sleeping
while I'm writing this song,
and the clock keeps on ticking,
the fire crackles on.
So goodnight
my little one
sleep tight honey child,
the essence of pride and joy

Oh how I remember the fear of making big mistakes with my first child *grin* guess what he survived and he and I and his brother have a wonderful relationship so I guess my mistakes were my own imaginings in some part.

Hi Shadow, you are absolutely right. We (all of us) need to remind ourselves that bringing children into this world is the greatest privilege and responsibilty we will ever shoulder. All children (rightly or wrongly) look up to adults to show them the way. So even when they aren't ours we still need to do our part to help them them realize all of their potential. Thanks for the feedback.

This is very good. I would only add that when appropriate we offer some of that encouragement to whatever children we are touched by in our lives. Given what you've said I'm sure you already do this. Poems like this help to remind us how much encouragement children need.

Wonderful thoughts of one of the greatest truths to life. I just thought the other day about how fast life speeds by as I watched my third child try on her wedding dress. No regrets of things missed, just pride in how wonderful she (as well as the other 3) have turned into adults.

Wow ferg....this is another beautiful one. I am going through this right now. I have 3 that have already left home with my last one only a year away. I have no regrets, I have always been there for them, now it's me who has to deal with the emptiness of children gone. :(

Thanks CM and kvwriter. I look at my children as a savings account. Everything and more of what you put in comes back. There is no experience that I know of quite like the privilege of being a parent.

This was beautiful, Ferg! And, so true. I gave my all to my children, and it's wonderful to be able to look back with no regrets, as far as my children, now grown, are concerned. Especially enjoyed the quote by CM. I actually read this to my children, and they understood, and loved its message. Thanks!;)Kelly

Hi CM, thanks for that. I have read those profound words before and it was especially meaningful to read them again in reference to my song. Being a parent is the amateur's last stand. So much wisdom and insights have come to me as a result of this experience. My children are everything to me.

I believe it was Gibran who said...

'Your children are not your children
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you
You may give them your love but not your thoughts
For they have their own thoughts
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.....'
