Cat Dances

Through the dew drops of morning,
Cat faces peer from the bushes,
orange stripped, gray and black,
growling pleasure of concealment,
waiting, claws honed to perfect points,
watching tiny movements through wise eyes.

Listening for any whisper or peep,
each sniffs the air to catch
a walking dinner asking to be eaten.

Rubbing on benches in the park
jumping from seat to seat,
they practice their technique,
searching for something delicious
from yesterday's tossed trash,
occasionally licking their legs and paws
for traces of something stepped in
that would make a nice treat.

Tiny feet patter down alleyways
full of dented trash cans in rows
just begging for someone to tip them,
go for a lovely repast.

Tigers and lions their makers,
they hunt like they are
stalking savanna grass predators.

House cats that they are,
twirling around any shown leg
attached to human food givers.

Then...the calls begin.
Come in, come in, they say.
Cat tails bob and collar bells ring
as the owners run to dinner
in warm homes nestled in the city
among the lights that glow at night.

Purring their delight at belonging,
dreaming of feathers between their teeth,
lapping a glass of wine.

heehee poor kitties who are left without someone to love them and teach them their manners - my little angel gets teased by the birds and usually only manages to bring the odd lizard inside to chase around and add to the growing inhouse population to keep her company during the day - cool write Sprite :)

So true. We just put up a bird feeder in the backyard, and my calico spends half her time trying to catch her one, the other half dreaming of Tweety on toast.
