Heroes Of The Land

HEROES OF THE LAND

I would love to live in the eighteen hundreds,
among pioneer women and men long ago.
They  helped to expand this countries vastness,
settling the vast wilderness they did not know.

They took their loved ones and few belongings,
driving their wagons towards the setting sun.
Harsh conditions took it's toll along the way,
they buried their loved ones when day was done.

As the wagon train reached the journey's end,
their real hardships had only just begun.
They must clear the land to build their shelter,
and hunt in the forest with their musket guns.

Sometimes their homes were raided by the Indians,
they only were trying to take back their own land.
The Indians fought with their bows and arrows,
with their muskets the settlers would defend land.

The cold north wind, would start to howl,
winter's harsh elements meant death to the weak.
Death would claim the old and the very young,
no medicine, no doctors, only comfort to seek.

These pioneers survived their many hardships,
tamed wilderness as far as they could see.
Sacrificed and endured with faith in God,
these pioneers are the true heroes to me.

    good

This is very good. You did a great job of describing what it was like back then. I agree with the previous comment that I could not handle a trip like that. good job on this one though.

    excellent~

Perfect historical description you have given here...
I love to read books like these....so strong and brave....
Don't think I could of handle cooking in a cast iron cauldron or making lye soap to do clothes with...and forever hunting in the woods to find berries and bark for fever's etc...
Loved this and best of luck in the contest...
    Susan~~~
