keeps the doctor away.
A gun in the home
makes a home less safe.
Which of these is true?
Garlic wards off
the vampires
and guns are used
five times more often
to prevent crimes
than commit them.
Wednesday's child
is full of woe
Thursday's child
has far to go
But the boy whose
father takes him hunting
is less likely
to be delinquent.
Touch blue
and your wish
will come true.
To preserve liberty
it is essential
that the whole body of people
always possess arms.
Cross my heart
and hope to die,
Cut my throat
if I tell a lie
Guns
do not 'cause' violence.

Heh, I'd have to dissagree, I'm with being able to bear arms. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. More people are saved by haveing a gun with them then dying because they didn't have one.
But you don't care about that. The poem flows well. That's all you really want to hear eh? -
I like the way you've laid out your thoughts, using old wives tales at the beginning of each stanza. Oh yeah-
You've caused quite the controversy, haven't you?!?
-
If this is an attempt at satire, social commentary, I think it is a little unclear. Myself, being totally against guns I understand your message, but it took me a second to get it, I think it is a little confusing but I agree with what you are saying. This is a subject I am very passionate about and it is always nice to meet someone as educated and passionate as I am.
-
There is so much more to this than this piece shows. Sure, there are all kinds of stupid slogans. Always have been. But the problem with these kinds of debates is that everyone seems to have lost the ability to look at the big picture. The kind of people that existed in this country when the right to bear arms was held so valuable do not, mostly, exist now. The population of this country has been so dumbed down and made dependent that it has nothing like the same kind of character needed to bear arms responsibly. Or do a lot of other things. The question that none ask, which is far mor important than the right to or not to bear arms, is why. They don't want to know. The answer isn't pretty.

I do not neccesarily agree with what you say in this poem but will say the form and flow were great. As for the content.....they may not in entirety cause violence....but they do attribute to it greatly. Were they not accessible....crime would be lower...in my humble opinion.
Either way blessed be

i dont agree with the purpose of this poem at all...guns kill and so do people. anyone can be a killer...it just matter who and what provokes them.
but the rhyme was ok. -
guns don't kill people, rappers do
was that song an influence? title sounded kinda familiar to me. the poem really picks up steam on the wednesday child, thursday child bit, before that kinda plodded along i thought, over than that great write

Riddle me this..if we keep our guns locked up how can we use them in that split second that we need them?
-
Free load? Your ignorance is staggering on so many levels. You in california are going to protect me here in KS with a 40 caliber handgun? I'm still stumped how a handgun will protect you from a car accident, house fire, cancer, or any other threat to your life other than the mysterious attacker that MAY(most likely will not) somedoay break into your house looking for some items for quick cash to support their drug habit or whatever. When you put everyone around that gun in risk everyday. It baffles me why we think the boogie man is going to break in and kill us in our sleep...oh wait if that happens you won't have time to get the gun..hmmm! I must laugh some more...the funny thing is I can argue your side just as easily as I can argue this side. But, me being dumber than dirt and the jerk I am will let you give it a try first. listening intently

I had to reread your illogical reply again, once I stopped laughing. So you mean to tell me that if everyone that was shot dead had a gun of their own that they wouldn't have been killed? So if all 11,000 had their own gun when they died you'd be ok with that? I'm not seeing a point in that statement anywhere.
-
I'm dumber than dirt by pointing out facts. You did nothing to answer the question asked. Of course you will immediately attack the messenger when you yourself do not have anything of value to add to a conversation. I never once voiced my opinion on the matter I simply stated what the film portrayed. You see it is people like you, the ones that allow yourself to get offended by words, that carry a gun and shoot unarmed people like myself, and I'm the jerk? When you are protecting life you are also taking it away when guns are involved, what gives you the right to make that decision? We need to educate everyone that guns are not the end all solution for protection. We live in a paranoid society and I bet you will get angry by just reading this comment, you may even want to harm me and call me names, rub my nose in the American dirt so you can carry your 40cal for another 10 years before one of your unarmed kids finds it and shoots themselves because you needed that sense of protection. Bring it on..bubba.
-
mrepoet you are dumber than dirt those 11,000 died because they weren't carring a weapon. so free load on all us that do protect our life and the lives of all around us, jerk!
-
I live in California USA the fact is I have carried a locked and loaded 40cal for ten years and have never had to display it...it is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it. where I live the only legal use of lethal force is to protect life unless of course your in the goverment they can shoot anyone anytime and get off scott free!...steveV

As you're British (unless I'm confused here- if so, sorry), I'm sure you will have heard of the man from Oxfordshire who, in defense from two burglars, shot and was charged with manslaughter. For defending himself. I can't remember the details but most Brits will have heard of his story. Some interesting points here: especially about the hunting...
-
While I agree with the statement that guns don't cause violence, and I DO agree with our right to bear arms, I just have to say that accidents DO happen. I hate the thought of guns in homes of irresponsible people, and there are PLENTY of those in the world! And if guns are going to be near kids they need to be LOCKED UP!
-
Hmmm...creative approach here, though I found the last stanza to be lacking some, perhaps a result of changing from trochaic meter to free verse? That goes on a couple places in the piece, but it's most distinct there. Pretty good, though.
As for my opinions, I'm not completely against guns, and I realize that they don't cause violence. They do expediate it, however. Guns are no cause but rather a supplication to the violent tendencies of human nature. We crave competition, violence, aggresive behavior, but our "civilized" minds repress it until it dwindles to sports, commercial hunting, fist fights, and the occassional set-off individual who chooses to maim or kill. You also have the televised broadcast of Timothy McVay's execution. Some of the aforementioned are great alternatives to others. So guns, whether held with innocent or more sinister intention, are either way, a quick, convenient means to unleash an unstable facet of human nature, a facet which cannot be repressed but cannot be fully unleashed. So what of guns? With certain restrictions, they should be allowed. But what is the defense, sport, or practical use of an M-16? -
Good write, deldev and I agree with you. It would be easy for me to get into a debate on the subject of gun rights, but I wont....
Thanks for this worthwhile, though controversial piece.

don't 100% agree with your point of view, but this was a well writen and though out poem.

I suggest you see the documentary Bowling for Columbine if you haven't already. You will be amazed at the question posed by this film. Why does America have more deaths my guns than any other western "civilized" society? And not by only a few..the numbers were 11,000 (I'm rounding) in 2002 ...Australia had 160, Japan 150, France 120, England 70, Germany 100 and Canada had the least with like 30. Most of these countries had violent pasts, diverse ethnic populations, similar divorce rates(England has a higher divorce rate and therefore more disjointed families than the US but 100 times fewer gun deaths), and/or plenty of guns Canada has roughly 10 million families and 7 million guns. So why do Americans use guns to kill more than any other country?
-
Ah, someone else who knows that the murderer is the one aiming the gun, not the gun! I love it. It's a very nice write and very honest. Wonderful job!
-
Well i can respect your views, however, I must say that I have also seent he movie Bowling For Columbine. Though guns may not have originally been a cause for violence, I think in recent years, it definitely plays a major role in deaths.
Don't get me wrong, when used repsonsibly, they're fine. The problem I have with guns, is that the people that use them are often careless about it. They can't change people, so they change laws...that's the way it goes, right?

I understand completely what you are trying to say, however i will also honestly admit that I am not exactly sure how I feel about that subject........America seems to be the only country that feels it necessary to have the right to carry arms, and it is also in America that alot of innocent s do get killed by those arms , but as I said...this could go on into a debate without an end, and I really do not have the answers , you make sense , but to me there is still that big"BUT"
Respect,
Reenie

It’s true indeed that guns do not cause violence – they are but a tool, but change a simple shouting match to homicide… see that or be a fool!
-
so incredibly true... guns don't cause violence, the people do...
luv ya

True, True. I agree with you and Huntress...guns are not the problem. People just have screwed up minds and they decide to use them. It's not like a gun can MAKE you use it, so guns are definantly not the problem. This write was awesome!! I love it!

thats so true i people that guns dont cause violence i believe that people in there own mind and state cause violence and i try so very hard to walk away from it. me being young in the world is helping me so see how so much hate between things cause violence and how parents who have kids and dont care about them cause violence.your poem was good and i feel that it was well thought out not just written down like some poems on this site. keep up your awesome work.
-
so true, so true. great work! guns do NOT cause violence, and if they are taken away, there are STILL going to be criminals that'll get their hands on one. then, if that person goes on a killing rampage, how will we stop them? we have no guns.
i'm a make love, not war kind of girl, but i'm also logical.
great job! -
Oooh, your walking along a political mine field here my friend.
However I don't agree - Having guns in the Home makes you rely too much on the thing, which can lead to tricksyness - for example, a teenager arriving home after a late night could be, to a drowsy trigger happy father, a criminal - what happens then? Although you did make your point well. And it was a good poem - but maybe you should've gone to allphilosophy. However, morals aside. This is a brilliant poem. well done

I agree with you, guns are not the problem. It is the idiots with the guns. I think if every house in america had a gun in it there would be less crime. I read an article about a town somewhere in the usa where it was a law to own a gun. Crime there was non existent. Everyday we lose more and more of our rights. No one seems to notice. Great write you have here
