Bill Clinton's Presidency (Italian Sonnet)

Missing image
by Gregg Rowe

Can any politician not seek Fame
with Chastity rather than Temptation
Pandora’s Box opens -- then redemption
Is asked after playing the risky game.

‘I did not have sex with, what is her name?’
He coolly said as he faced his Nation
Rhetorical lies; Clinton’s creation
Scarlet woman tradition dictates blame

Television soft speeches emits skills
He must have said it under duress
This liar who’s caught in sexual thrills
But evidence remains -- that silk stained dress
A Nation watched as Clinton fell apart
And saved through Hillary's grace -- not my art.

Author notes

November 21st, 2004:  Just an update on this one...Clinton has opened up a Museum in Little Rock, Arkansa and has proven he is quite egotistic about his term in the White House.  So much that he is the only President to replicate the Oval House at the Museum.  Ohh, those memories are still alvie...Tourists will be able to play Find the Dress after they pay their $10.00 American Entrance fee...who is prostituting who here?    And what does Hillary say about this particular Oval Office -- is this where Bill Clinton will sleep when they now have an argument!?.

Interesting topic. Maybe Clinton thinks being diplomatic is more important than excessive truthfulness and perhaps unnecessary. Pierre Trudeau said once what goes on behind closed door of our bedroom is nobody business. Perhaps certain privileges are allowed to politicians, generally speaking it isn't that big of a deal in our world and it's pretty much tolerated in our culture. I think Clinton refused to think it an important issue and relevant to his carrying on his duty as president. The problem in my view is the hypocricy of our society but on the other hand we all have a moral duty to defend the sanctity of marriage and i guess the reason we carry on the way we do. I give Clinton credit for doing the political correct "Thing". Sure hope his operation goes well, afterall he is a nice guy. cake

"Bill Clinton's Presidency: Italian Sonnet" is quite bizarre: the title says it all. It is Pythonesque, like the Sheffield Townswomen's Guild doing their reenactment of Pearl Harbor. Sorry but I don't really know enough about Mr Clinton to comment, as I am a foreigner. Off now to write Ken Livingstone: A Satire in Sonata-Rondo form, with clarinet obbligato.

Hey there Gregg! i didn't love the fact that clinton got busted doing the dirty...but...i definitely think there is far worse to worry about than what he was doing with his cigars behind closed doors lol.

    I really liked this piece though...particularly the second stanza...i probably wasn't supposed to giggle...but i did...lol

All I can say is when Clinton was in office I had spare change in my pocket and I laughed a lot. Now I'm broke and we're at war and I'm no longer laughing, especially at that hefty deficit we now have under GWB. As for authors comments. I don't believe they see each other enough to argue.

Thanks so much for entering this contest.

    Hey Gregg,

Funny poem but your comment made me laugh harder - the oral office. Through the whole Clinton fiasco, I never heard that one. lol

I just finished The Kennedys and The Fitzpatricks' family bio and The Rockefeller’s three generations bio and there definitely was some hanky-panky going on in the White House but not in the Oral --err, I mean Oval Office.

    Say it friend

I agree with AngelBoy and loved your response to him. You're really kicking it with this humor gig you're on. Myself...I was a big Clinton fan. Of course I wasn't too thrilled with the events, but the way I feel about it is that unfortunately he so happened to get caught. I refuse to believe that he was the only President to have some Hanky Panking going on in the White House. Kennedy was a womanizer, and he has been my hero since childhood. Maybe that is saying a little about me, and all the bad choices I've made in life when it come to men. Anyway I will not make any excuses for him except to say that he comes from the generation of "make love not war". There I go trying to be funny, and not doing a very good job at it!! Sorry not much of a critique I know, just my two cents. Jacki

    Brilliant!

Way to go Gregg! I love this it's a brilliant sonnet and the sarcastic tone of it works so well. None of us can deny that we love to see those with power fall from grace and that is vividly highlighted in this verse. Stunning, well done

You did a nice job with this, Gregg. A bit of comedy, a lot of reality, and just plain politics. I'm not a fan of Clinton, but he was my husbands Commander in Chief for 8 years, and wasn't very well received or respected.

Laughing. Politics. I would of just said yes, I enjoyed every single minute of it. Then asked what was on the agenda next. Perhaps an orgy of violence before a quiet stroll in the park.

    Dear Gregg,
You STILL haven't got iambic pentameter right have you? Some of these lines are way out. But it's a damned good poem even if it isn't a perfect sonnet.
    Regards, Hugh.
