The Butterfly

Missing image
Transparent, gossamer, drifting
betwixt rose and carnations;
Multicoloured segments, emerald,
scarlet and black.

Floating on currents,
too fine to see; Drifting
carelessly, as a ghostly
apparition, darting.

Wings enclose, softly
cocooning, hiding from
sight, this gentle creature;
Fragile, yet beautiful.

Emerged, from a ugliness
and evolved; Stately delicate,
as a whisper,
on the breeze.

Author notes

I saw this creature on a rose,amazing how fragile they are

    Yes it is sad what some people think is beautiful, Entombing butterflies and moths always makes me feel as if it like onwing a trophy, where you see lion and buffalo heads mounted on walls such a waste , thank you for your kind words and also fo reading so many of my poems, I do appreciate the time it takes

    I love butterflies, always have; and your poem evokes so many memories for me. Interesting how when you find a bit of writing as this it seems to trigger images deep in the soul. I guess that’s what makes poetry good and good poetry great. When I was little, a neighbor found out about my keen interest in butterflies. So he came over, one day, with a big wooden box under his arm and said “do you want to see my butterflies?” I was ecstatic and could hardly contain my excitement. I said I did. When he opened the hinged box, I looked up, toward the ceiling expecting to see the butterflies above me. Straining my eyes to see, i saw that there weren’t any flying around. That’s odd I thought, maybe they’re just shy so I looked inside the box. What I saw horrified me. Ten to twenty butterflies were encased in glass boxes all dried out with pins stuck in them. “How could any one be so cruel!” I screamed. My dad boxed my ears and my mom yelled at me for being so rude and ill mannered I was heart broken...I remember my thoughts to this day; “ butterflies are for living and flying, not torture and glass tombs”. I’ll have to write a poem someday about that.
    Blessings and best wishes to you

    i like your description of the butterfly, but better yet the illusion behind it all is the transforming from one life to the other. a reverse transformation maybe? good eye opener

    You've been to my pages recently...so you KNOW I love flutterbyes...a LOT...are you aware that the Native Americans believe that butterflies carry the newly deceased Spirit to Heaven? It does make sense...& is a very lovely thought, as well...I especially liked the last stanza...the whole poem...but the last one in particular.....Great write, Poet!!! & Keen observational skills, as well... ...Wanda

    The first thing I noticed about this poem was its great rhythm, and its beautiful structure. the first stanza really blew me away. it is really very well-written. very nice diction. but i wonder if there is anything else to it that you meant to say, besides simply describing a butterfly. i'm not saying that there's anything wrong with a simple description, because here, you craft a very complex and interesting one. however, i didn't really feel like the rest of the poem really supported the idea you presented at the end.

    The intricate beauty of the butterfly is only rivaled by it's diversity... hundreds af species world-wide - each flmaboyant it their perfect - minute picassos' in their own right. You gotta luv 'em..! Fun, light-heated musings..

    What a life a butterfly has, drifting from flower to flower, and the flying. I dream of flying, more like a butterfly's float. And all of the beautiful flowers they see. They are drawn to bright colors. wonderful poem, very beautiful.
