Now Hewitt Island stands not far from shore
A gentle hill of green midst crystal blue
With morning light the loon and heron soar
And far away a hawk glides into view
The morning water's smooth, unrippled glass
That shimmers 'neath the sun's now golden glow
Then ripples as the gentle breezes pass
The shattered light is nature's laser show
The air alive with vibrant sights and sounds
A blue jay squawks and small birds take to flight
A chipmunk chirps, then flashes underground
While humming birds dart quickly out of sight
Another sip of coffee and I smile
I think I'll just sit here and watch a while
A gentle hill of green midst crystal blue
With morning light the loon and heron soar
And far away a hawk glides into view
The morning water's smooth, unrippled glass
That shimmers 'neath the sun's now golden glow
Then ripples as the gentle breezes pass
The shattered light is nature's laser show
The air alive with vibrant sights and sounds
A blue jay squawks and small birds take to flight
A chipmunk chirps, then flashes underground
While humming birds dart quickly out of sight
Another sip of coffee and I smile
I think I'll just sit here and watch a while

Wonderful!
I cannot tell you the emotions that poured through me as I read "Hewitt Island" and saw the photo that started it off. I love poetry, but I'm not a poet myself. Maybe someday ... But Hewitt Island was once owned by my father's family; we have videotapes of their trips there, and crossing on the ferry. Your sonnet is wonderful, and beautiful, and takes me there immediately. My sister found your sonnet and sent me the link, wondering if it could be the same island, and it is. Thank you so much for putting it into words, capturing all the natural elements within the sonnet to this much-loved place.
I am in awe of you.

This is a beautiful poem. It's got no volta, so its a Curtal sonnet. However, it's fairly well perfect otherwise. Shakespearian sonnets have a volta as do Petrarchean and all other sonnets but Curtal sonnets.

That's really fantastic. Beautiful description, and I love how you've finished it off. I felt as though I was there.
I don't think I need to tell you that your rhythm and rhyme are impeccable -- but I will anyway because it's nice when people notice these things
If there's something I would work on a little, it's the third verse. You're going through the different wildlife that can be seen there, but the structure of the last few lines of that stanza is so similar that it emphasises the sameness of the wildlife instead of the variety, if you see what I mean. Is there anyway you can rephrase a line or two to take away that structural repetition?
It's lovely, though. I wish I could see it for real!

You really must have been inspired here, you have written a beautiful sonnet about a place that must be magical - a little slice of heaven, as they say. A sonnet can be lovely if the inspiration is right, I think - and you have done a tough form setting a loving and peaceful scene. Delightful.

This is so peaceful! I can just imagine just watching the rippled lake saunter by, with the animals going about their lives as if I wasn't there. Sigh, reminds me of the times I used to spend in the country. I miss those days! Dari xxx

Again I will say that this is absolutely beautiful. And you know I don't like sonnets.
