First Night Home

Ripped painfully from your heart by grace,
Given tiny legs and arms,
Unable to move,
Dependant on you,
Helpless.

A soft warm blanket of lace,
Wrapped in your arms,
Peaceful and serene,
Loving soothing touch,
Snuggling.

A delicate flower in a protective vase,
Watered and nourished,
Nurtured and loved,
Resting for the night,
Security.

A scared fawn needing an embrace,
Crying for attention,
Frantically pleading,
Desperately desiring,
Satisfying.

Sunshine upon a smiling face,
Radiant and beaming,
Waves of pleasurable,
Euphoric delight,
Melting.

A heart wrapped in a blanket love.
A fawn sleeps near a bedded flower,
Warmed by the sun.

From the heart a baby is born,
As a warm blanket a baby feels,
Like a delicate flower a baby is nursed,
As a scared fawn a baby needs,
Like sunshine is a baby's pleasure.

Author notes

I tried to capture what that first night home must feel like for mother and child.
I have to give my sister a little credit. She once described having a baby as taking your heart and giving it legs.

Beautiful pictures, a baby is all that and more.
I'm starting to understand your progressive metaphor form.

This piece encompasses to me all that childbirth represents. Very wonderful descriptions from both perspective of mom and newborn. Loved to read this and it brought back memories. Rose

I never really thought of the fear that a child may be having when they are first born...maybe that is why they cry so much and we attribute it all to hunger. Maybe they just find comfort from the food- it makes them feel safe. You sure made me see a babys birth in a different light.

This is wonderful!! You have just described a baby so well. They are so dependant on the nurturer for everything. So sweet and innocent......so many hopes for the future!!
