The coal town was once full of life
now the mines have closed their doors
the streets are lined with abandoned houses
only a few old miners live here anymore
The streets still turn black from soot
the coal banks are piled so high
every time the wind starts to blow
the coal dust fills the skies
The strip mining pits remind me of hell
they've taken the beauty from the land
there's now a vast dark hole in the ground
surrounded by piles of coal, dirt and sand
The trees have died on the mountain
all the wildflowers died years ago
even the winter has lost it's beauty,
the coal dust makes it look like black snow
Grass fills the cracks in the sidewalks
the old general store is run down
the trains would stop at least twice a day
now they pass right through this coal town
The best days of this old town are gone
the only thing left are memories
now there's only barren black landscape
all around for these sad eyes to see

nice job
This was a great poem Sandy I really felt like I was right in the middle of town. It takes a good writer to do that. -
