Enticing Africa

Flying high in deep blue African skies,
over the Serengeti plain,
where languidly leonine majesty lies,
imperially tossing his mane.

The Savannah is alive in the sun,
giraffes, wildebeest, and antelopes graze,
chased by a cheetah, gazelles run,
escaping noonday heat, the big cats laze.

Topped by snow stands Kilimanjaro's might,
its strange beauty enhanced by clouds,
sending fancies on an exciting flight,
mystical, in its snowy shroud.

Stunning Tanzania, astounding, grand,
encrusted with great lakes of blue,
the Rift Valley carved by nature's hand,
fills minds and hearts with wonder true.

Captivating Africa warmly smiles,
irresistible is its lure,
temptress, bewitchingly beguiles,
its enchantment is without cure.

I love Africa. This poem portrays it in such a beautiful way. I love this part:

"The Savannah is alive in the sun,
    giraffes, wildebeest, and antelopes graze,
chased by a cheetah, gazelles run,
escaping noonday heat, the big cats laze."

It felt like I was there in Africa when I read it. Thank you for this beautiful piece!

I have only just realized that I have never in fact commented on this. I have read it twice before, but never told you what I thought.
It is a picturesque journey across a vast continent. I feel like I maybe it is describing one of those National Geographic clips where it gives you all the highlights in about 3 minutes, the best of the best to be seen.
    thank you for sharing this.

This is stunning Pari! You have written a wonderful piece ofpoetry! It is perfect inevery way. It certainly makes me want to know more about Africa. The fauna and the flora... I know near to nothing of the flora of Aarica which is a shame since I am sure there are some truly amazing plants and trees growing there. The fauna, well, so many majestic, wonderful and completely unique animals make Aafrica their home it would be impossible to not know some, though I am certain there are many more with a great deal of intrigue. A fabulous poem and best of wishes... ~genielassie~

    Vivid

I have heard that Africa has an unusual attraction, but not having been there, I have to take your word for it. It is a different and beautiful place, but I think that we overlook the beauty and diversity of our own homelands, "familiarity breeds contempt".
The first stanza starts with flying high, and suddenly we are looking at lions. The other stanzas each have their own theme, perhaps more could be said about flying, and about the plain.
The rhyming, meter, and imagery are very good, this was a pleasure to read.

When I was about 13 my Dad was offered a job in Africa. I was horrified to think that I had to move to such a strange place. Finally told my parents I wasn't going unless I could have a pet elephant! ( Yeah..like black mail from a 13 year old holds any weight! ) Bottom line was they were going to move, and I was going to have to go to bording school. ( oh that made my day! ) Well my Dad ended up NOT taking the job, he went to Venezuela by him self instead. And I was quite happy to not have to experience change, and knowledge, and a new way of looking at life.

God...we can be such idiots as kids. I missed out on the chance of a lifetime. I am very sorry that I didnt get a chance to experience a fraction of the beauty portrayed in this poem.

Excellent piece very much filled with beauty.
    Very enjoyable!

    Hugs...

A very good poem... Africa is one of those places where ever you look, you have vast space for as far as the eye can see... the bush veldt, the Animal Kingdom, the wide, far-reaching sky with its many moods. Chuck has already mentioned the dangers that are always ready to spring up where there are wild animals, so always would one have to be very aware whilst looking at the beauty that surrounds in such a wild yet wonderful place. Your background is lovely for this write, the side border well remincient of Kilimanjaro... beautiful! ~Katie~

I tried to edit that one a bit drop by and look when you have a moment.
I agree with you about the lions. Anyways I think more men are killed by men then they ever could by animals, in Africa or elsewhere, and it is the poachers who pose a bigger threat to the animals than the animals could ever pose to man.
Africa once seen gets into a persons blood forever, it is an unforgettable experience even if it is looking at Kilimanjaro or the rift valley or one of the lakes from a plane window. I tried to capture a little of that feeling in this poem. There will be more on Africa.

    Dear Pari,
Your description of Africa is valid and well expressed.
The last line of stanza #3 doesn't hang quite right but otherwise, well done.
The number of humans devoured in any year by lions, would hardly constitute "a harvest" as stated above. The danger element is minimal if visitors are accompanied by an experienced safari guide and only a fool would venture into a wild animal area without one.
An enjoyable read. I applaud it. Thanks for sharing.
    Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

wow, this is awesome. usually I don't really like a rhyming poem because people mess it up, but this one is amazing. I've never been to Africa (never been anywhere besides USA and Mexico) but I've seen lovely pictures. And all of them flashed through my head as I read. Amazing imagery. I like what Chuck Johnson said too, you might want to add that- it would complete the poem, unless your goal was to show the better side.

Very very nicely done. The danger of Africa should also be mentioned. The fact that no where else in the world does man take second place to the animal kingdom. Where we are soft weak pale things that make a harvest for the beast of Kings.
