Goodbye, My Friend

I sit here in tears, not knowing what to say
I had to say goodbye to you, today
It certainly wasn't your time,
None of us were ready to let go
I keep telling myself it was for the best
But my heart and will power are put to the test
...I'm sorry...

I watched you grow, I watched you play
I watched, without understanding
You're world slowly fading away
Once you could see the world around you
But it started to dissapear
The sky and trees once crisp and clear
Only shadows you grew to fear
...What happend?...

We tried everything we knew to do
Finally found a light, that we thought
Was shinning true, so we shipped you off
And hoped and prayed, that the experimental surgery
Would work like they thought
...We had hope....

You came back and seemed your old self
Running and playing, galloping and neighing
You could see the moon and the stars
You could see our faces, and we could yours
But it happend again, your world slowly growing thin
The shadows were creeping back, the darkness began to attack
...It all came back...

We tried for months, to help you come back
To keep you as you were, we loved you so much
Your sweet scent, and gentle touch
But you were insecure, and hurting yourself
The cuts on your face, the blood on your sides
Otherwise you were yourself, but we couldn't live this way
...That's why today, we had to let you go...

And it's now I sit here and write this,
Trying not to loose control, to let the tears
The remorse, the hurt and the guilt get to me
I try to remember our happy, healthy years...
I will miss you, we all will...
I wish there was something more we could have done
...I'm sorry, and goodbye my friend...

Author notes

*******

This is about my horse, Sundance who we had to put down today due to a rare disorder that makes a horse slowly go blind. I'll miss you, my friend.. I know, silly to write about a horse, but he meant so much to myself and my family.

This was heartbreaking ... exactly the kind of write that morbid me wanted to be reading - you had some very unique imagery and wording in here, as pet grieving poetry is naother kind that can become reptitive, but you took this one and made it your ownentirely - i liked especially ethe way that it was so personal to you, and yet, not written in too complex a manner ....

an excellent first write for me to start off reading with. thanks for entering and sharing this with us, and may your darling horse be waiting faithfully at Rainbow Bridge for you and all that he loved

No, not silly at all! Our pets our so important and valuable to us,and we can become just as attached to them as we do to the people in our lives. Pets have a way of giving us unconditional and pure love,no matter what. This is truly a sad poem, and I am sorry for the loss of your dear horse. There are a couple of typos here. The third line in the second stanza. You're, should be Your. Also in the second stanza, dissapear, should be disappear. Loose should be lose. This in no way affects my judging. I just like to point them out and I appreciate when people point my typos out as well. Great job,and thanks much for entering my contest. Blessings, Patty

    Deeply Written

It is not silly to write about a horse this way. Anyone who owns a pet knows that they become part of the family. That is natural. I applaud you and your ability to do wht is best for your family member that could not speak for themselves.
Very emotional write. Keep up the good work.

    Electrifyingly Dynamic

This stained my eyes with tears... Loss is so hard; we all suffer loss of some-kind. I new “once” a group who prayed for a dear soul; she (too) seemingly recovered, then months later she died of something else! God says (in the Holy Bible) our days are numbered; but he never said that we are all given the same amount of days on earth. However, I am “deeply sorry that your loved one has gone.” Your loss, and enchanting muse, "touched me very deeply..."

You commented on me a very long time ago and sadly it took me this long to return the favor. And it's not silly to write about a horse.... I had 2 when I was really small... I absolutely loved the blind more from the moment I laid eyes on him and insisted he had to be mine. I got my way as little girls who beg their fathers do and I walked him around and when we got rid of the 2 horses I cried for months. This reminded me of that in so many ways. I loved it. I'm sorry for your loss.

This is not silly what so ever. I am very sorry about this- I know it is a painful thing to have to do. I personally had to watch my horse intstantly die after getting the West Nile vacination. We were trying to save her from getting the virus, but instead she had an illergic reaction to the vacination. Having to go through something like you have is not easy, is very painful, and hard to deal with. I pray that you will find peace that you did the right thing, and that you will be able to move on, but remember the memories you had with this special friend. May God Bless you as you recover from your loss.

This definitely is sad. I am so sorry. Lots of people don't understand how truly strong a bond between a pet and its owner can be. I definitely understand. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I loved the way you wrote it...the structure, I believe it is called. Thanks again for sharing this with us.
