I remember it like yesterday
running for the first time and tripping
scraping my knee badly
and you were there right away
to coddle me as I cried over my first wound
(and you are amazed I remember that)
I remember it like yesterday
riding a bicycle for the first time
it was simple yet it was blue, my favorite color
and you patiently guided me
until I got it right
(and you are amazed I remember that)
I remember is like yesterday
eating popcorn and watching your softball games
although you were a pitcher
I imagined you a valiant knight
because your teammates spoke so highly of you
(and you are amazed I remember that)
I remember it like yesterday
finishing a 1600 meter relay race
and there you were standing at the end
ready to hug and congratulate me
regardless if our team won or lost
(and you are amazed I remember that)
I remember it like yesterday
I walked to accept my diploma from high school
and after I shook the Principal's hand
I looked out
and saw your face full of tears
(and you are amazed I remember that)
I remember it like yesterday
because these are the memories I hold dear to me
Dad, you were always my hero
and every happy memory I have had
has always involved you
(and so I hope you are always amazed I remember that)
Author notes
My father has always been there through the tough times and I have always known that he has been my hero, yet not until recently told him. This poem reflects that feeling

This is a very sweet poem! It really touched me! It was so true and full of emotion! I liked the repetition of and "you're amazed I remembered it" and "I remember it like yesterday!" Great job! I liked reading it! Good luck in the contest! Take Care!

Wonderful Job
Wow! This is such a wonderful heartfelt poem & a wonderful dedication to your dad. My father was my hero as well and my favorite color is blue as well! Tell your father how much he means to you, show him this poem & let him read this, for I know it will matter so much to him to read. I wish I wrote a poem for my dad, before he passed away from lung cancer almost 2 years ago. Wonderful Write, God Bless You & your Father

I was touched most by the first half of the piece, which WAS most touching. For some reason, when you got to relay races and diplomas, it lost its impact for me. Maybe because the older memories are those which resonate most with myself. Good luck in your contest.
