“Today for you, tomorrow for me,”

“Today for you, tomorrow for me,”
Was the line you sang eight times a week
After you stepped out onstage in ‘96
And made the Netherlander Theater glow
As the glorious Angel Dumott Schunard

Eight years later
You have long since wiped the red sparkles from your lips
And removed the platform pumps from supple feet
I was born too late to catch your shining presence on the stage
(Thank God for bootlegs)
But you are still the angel of my heart

I remember how, watching you, my best friend told me you weren’t a “real man”
Because you had the courage to dance and sing and
As if this weren’t enough
Do it in a skirt and zebra printed tights
I bitch slapped him
And quoted Angel directly saying that you
Were more of a man than he’d ever be
And more of a woman than he’d ever get

Oh, so many nights when stress or fear find me
Do I turn on your movie as I lay
And finally feel safe enough to drowse
With your beautiful face
The last thing I see

A love nest of curls the color of black licorice
Sweet Dominican skin like honey complimenting the
Dark chocolate eyes I could get lost forever in
Luscious Latina lips that in my dreams offer me the thousand sweet kisses you promised
Every part of you is candy
For the eyes
For the soul
For the lips?
I wish I could find out

Wow!!!! Very nice poem, very emptional. I loved Robert Preston who played a gay in Victor Victoria, not the same, Julie Andrews was the one who played the drag queen in that movie. Overall very good write. good luck!!!!
