Generation Y

12-year-old girl
Stabbed her 15-year-old brother
Over who got to use the fucking telephone
17 year old girl, convicted of purposefully spreading AIDS
Had her first kid at age 12
Pair of brothers kill their mother
Chop her arms and head off, like they saw on "the Sopranos"
13 and 14 year old brothers bludgeon their father to death
Once, twice, 37 times in the head
Kids killing kids, killing parents
Getting pregnant at age 12, becoming parents
"7-year-old girl raped by 9-year-old boy"
Glare the headlines
'Where did this happen?' They gasp
Why, in the elementary school bathroom.
(Not at the same school the teacher was pregnant
by a 13 year old boy, though)
Tell me I'm not the only one this shit makes sick
When did we get so jaded,
How did we get so depraved?
Continuous bloodbath of sex, orgy of violence.
Here we are in all our glory
Nothing is forbidden, and nothing is sacred.
Does generation Y
Have anything worth saving?

Author notes

all statistics taken from the book Generation S.L.U.T., which shows the actual newspapers and quotes and such, (i would recommend it if only for the statistics.) except for the 37 bit, that was artistic license. i've never been very good at society poems, but i'm a bit proud of this one. a bit stuck for title, appreciate suggestions and ways to make it better.

hmm interesting write. Very powerful, well written and true. Though you have to realise that what is said in then news is sensationalised and not everyone should be judged by those in the spotlight. Things like that don't happen where I'm from either. And I believe there is always hope, when you ask at the end. There's only hope as long as people realise that, and act upon it. And I know I can change it, being a teacher and future parent, at least for some. Great write, like I said powerful. And thought provoking. Obviously cos I wrote so much! Great job

good poem, and i don't usually like topical stuff. You are one of the more intelligent people across whom i have come in this godforsaken creative wasteland.

P.S. I love generation Y, and all the meaningless sex, violence, death, drugs, booze etc. involved. I think it's great!

Stupid generation Y. Where did the values go? Actually, I think America's values have been dead for some time now. I guess when all the cultures clash together what you get is a mindless violent mob with no values or anything else for that matter. Some will say "Well, it's our culture, we have to accept it" And maybe there's nothing else we can do. Statistics speak for themselves. We are beyond the point where something can be done.
Great poem, the title absolutely fits and the whole piece is truthful, straight-forward and doubtful. Great job.

It's sad to see what we've become. This was great, thanks so much for writing and putting it up here. It makes us all aware of things

    Good morning -
    Shades of hazy time
    Drag on eyelids,
    Lashes flicker in dreams
    Of sleeping drool.

    Good night -
    Soft comfort sings
    From the corner,
    Pillows seduce while
    Shoulders wave.

    Soft topping delight
    Wrapped around chocolate.

    Call my name and smile.

    Sip on the open laughter
    That tickles your fancy
    And close your eyes
    Inside the dream.

    Taste the mind -
    Enjoy as fingers probe
    The beautiful.

    Cheesecake saliva
    Drips from my tongue.

I would recommend Slut! Growing UP Female with a Bad Reputation. Actually this poem is pretty fucking awesome. Really spooky though, the thing is people report these things more often now, it's been about the same rate [murder and rape wise] as it used to be. Very good stuff though. Make more society poems I love it

Yes everything is so screwed up. I bet everyone now longs for the Gen X-ers of the early ninetys. Doesn't the world just suck? But we all have to try and better it one person at a time. That person is Y-O-U. Yeah! Go Cliches!
