Happy Birthday Mom

Happy Birthday, Mom
I’m 53, broke and homeless
Happy Birthday, Mom
I’m 53 and mentally ill
Happy Birthday Mom
Your son now has his mind
Happy Birthday Mom
For without you I would never have had a mind to lose
I’m happy it’s your birthday
Even when I know it’s really not
Because by your count, you’re only 20
I’m happy looking in the mirror
And seeing the eyes, nose and mouth you gave me
I’m happy with all my incarnations, incantations and spelling
I’m just glad to be writing, reading and breathing
Speaking to you, hearing you in my thoughts
And knowing yours is the only voice I hear
I am so happy for the quiet splatter of rain
And the joy of books so recently returned to me
I am happy without money because what I have is priceless
You have seen me with more and you have seen me with less
In darkness barely visible and triumphant over madness
Now, see me again for the first time
Looking ahead
Seeing beyond what I am
To what you
Hoped I would become
For that, Brian and I wish you the happiest of all birthdays.

A very honest poem, I felt that your mother either has a hard life or you have a harder life than her- there are lots of twists in this to show that despite it being a birthday it's not a 'happy' poem. This poem made me think whilst still being very personal, keep writing Thanks for commenting on my poem

I get the strong feeling that your Mother has passed on as you say you hear her in your thoughts - I hope I'm wrong.
this poemm tells me also that you have come from darkness to light, that you see a purpose to waking every day and counting your blessings - maybe I'm way off but I like the euphoria it contains.
    Happy birthday to kyattaman's Mom!

true love from where you came :)

Men released unto their mothers show much love, respect
the kind of man I am sure God does respect
I hope that your mum and family had a Beautiful Birthday and sure that she is so proud of this amazing love

Mothers truly know their children. It seems that your mom knows where you are and what you are about, no matter what others may see. Mother are like that, yeah, they are. This is endearing and speaks truths only a mother knows, whether she is amoung us or has gone beyond, she knows! Excellent sentiments and feelings written here my friend. Hope all is well with you!
