Across The Mason Dixon Line.... A Collaboration with Repomen79

My darling, distance aches within,
I sleep on hallowed ground.
Made holy by the souls of men,
Whose sacrifice has bound,
My heart unto a principle,
That outshines any other.
That freedom be invincible,
And all men be my brother.
Oh but the love I hold for you!
And the conflict in my heart.
That the very thing I hold as true,
Does keep us so far apart......

Time nor distance does not dim,
This love I share with you.
I pray to God this war should end,
That we might start anew.
I wish I could but understand,
This honor, men hold so dear.
That causes one to fight his friend,
In hatred and in fear.
What shall become of this way of life,
That we have come to know.
Will brothers live in peace once more,
Or will this abhorrence grow......

My love I write, by firelight,
Awaiting mornings call.
My thoughts are turned to you this night,
And if somehow I fall,
My soul will fly to where you lie,
For there my joy was found.
My love for you could never die,
If you want me look around.
Have no fear, my precious dear,
For honor's hardest part.
Was to march away from your sad tear,
Despite my broken heart......

Beneath the weeping willow tree,
Where last we spoke our hearts.
I sit here in my reverie,
And then the teardrops start.
So many tales of bravery,
Of battles won and lost.
So many marching off in glory,
No matter what the cost.
But it’s been so long since last we heard,
Now my fears have all come true.
My Darling please, come back to me,
For my heart cries out to you......

How tragic be the sins of men,
To find they must atone.
Upon the field of battle when,
Their women mourn alone.
In letters penned, they did extend,
Across the battle line.
Eternal love that knew no end,
How bright their dreams did shine.
So great is General Grant's regret,
For things that should have been.
Her love has paid the greatest debt,
And will not come home again......

Dear pat, the memories are flooding back tonight, I cry tears of joy for having known Patric, his work must never be lost to float in limbo, keep bringing it out for others to read. Oh Pat, I miss him so..just as we all do who knew him.I also have this voice over one and often play both of them. Thank you~Joan~

Thank You Sam... I got together with AnnD to change Patricks front page and while doing so I thought of all the poetry that sits on this site unread. Things we wrote only a year or so ago but float in limbo. So I'm going through some of my old stuff and Patricks and promoting it for the newer members to see... I hope you'll stop by Patricks page and leave a comment or two.. If not for him then for those to come later...

If it wasn't mentioned, there's no way I'd have known two people wrote this together. The stanzas were well matched and flowed one from the other and to the other again. Beautiful writing. It's often hard for me to imagine that people can speak so eloquently about a subject that's not "personal", but you've proven otherwise. I'm impressed, and that's not often easy where rhyme is concerned in my book. Great work here, and I should hope you would collaborate again.

Sheer brilliance! I would applaud, but I`ve got none left! My favourite stanza has to be the 3rd one - `...by firelight` - I don`t know why this makes me feel.....something special, but writing by firelight has such depth and beauty - I can`t describe it....but I loved it. Thankyou for directing me to these pieces....

Beautiful...poetic for lack of a better word! So lovely and decadent to the time. I loved the Civil War era, and this gives it a brilliance.

    Thank you for this!

What a wonderful collaberation. You two work so well together, can't help but wonder if there's a more personal connection :) Just my romantic side kicking in, I guess.
This poem is so full of emotion and love. I sometimes think about how a person must feel when in a warlike situation, away from home, lonely, scared, brave, wondering if he'll make it 'til tomorrow. I've tried to write about it but it never comes out the way I feel it. Hopefully someday I'll be able to get it right.
This work of yours and repo's, though is perfect. A beautiful piece.

There is such power in the beauty of this. Oh Patrick...you've got such a gift, and Strmdncr the combination of your talents and Patricks...well, it defies description, really.
This moved me for many reasons, but the truth and humanity of it just shined. My favourite stanza was the last and I loved this bit:
How tragic be the sins of men,
    To find they must atone.
Upon the field of battle when,
    Their women mourn alone.

So sad, that and so much truth to it.
Well done you two! It's a BEAUT. xxxx
