Families are gathered,
it's winter once more,
suddenly without warning
unwanted knock at the door.
As they open the door,
not too wide,
old man winter
pushes inside.
Close all the windows,
shut the doors tight,
winters first frost
is arriving tonight.
Hurry, bring the dog in,
don't let him freeze,
I don't want the flu
go away, you sneezed.
Winters fallen snow,
glistens on the hills,
leaving lasting beauty
so quiet,so still.
With ground frozen over,
a purple crocus appears,
thank God, finally,
spring must be near.
It's goodbye old man winter,
kind of sad to see him go,
now time for gentle rains
to help the crocus grow.

Living in Minnesota, the winters are terrible and freezing! It's may now and still snowing up here! A very cute poem full of pretty pictures. Wonderful work!

Excellant/fun
I almost thought that Frosty the Snowman, was going to come walking thru my door. However, I'ld rather have the crocus' for now. Very well written indeed. -
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
I can feel the cold wind blow, the wet snow on my feet. And as the warmer weather brings to rains the buds sprout so green and bright.

Great poetry. -
nice
Reading a winter poem in summer is definitly not the best to do but it's not that perfect weather here so I won't get a cold.
What I wanted to say was. Your poem is great. Even though I got the title a bit wrong. Which is definitly my fault - putting in some words that are not there is not the best thing to do. Back to the topic... Go on with your great work... as I go on reading it.

Delightful
I am COLD; I shiver still
From the writing of your quill
Bundle up, that wind is shrill
Stoke that fire; yes I will -

Loved the wit and humor on this...especially as our spring sprung back to winter today here in Colorado Springs...lol. When you live in a place where seasons are intermixed you gotta learn to
it somewhat, tho. Your piece here had me giggle alot as I looked at the on again, off again snow. Thanks for posting such a melodious and witty piece.

I wish a winter like that would come in Arkansas. I would kill to have to worry about getting the flu. I miss my home (RI).

Great job. We don't have Old man winter visit us here in the tropics but since I'm from N.Y. I know him well. Terrific write.
-
WOW. Astonishing. This poem is very, very interesting and funny. I can tell that you are pretty wise, the way you chose the words you do. I love the way you make us believe that there is a stranger of harm then make it be "Old man winter". How funny. You make such an ordinary thing so dramatic. Awesome job!

nicely worked piece with lots of descriptive image...good luck in the contest and welcome to all poetry...hugs...leanne xxx

I love this - opening the door for winter and Spring 'warm' on it's tail. I remember the Crocus and snow drops that flower in England and push their way above the snow level - just lovely.
thanks for your entry and good luck.
