~by Gregg Rowe~
On this Father's Day, I wish to send you
A special message, that is long overdue
A bachelor, farmer, and provider
You split the church, became a divider
You went against the Catholic beliefs
City-style woman, learns to wear kerchiefs
Standing on church stairs, marriage vows exchanged
I know living with you won't be deranged
Married my mother, inherits five kids
To my stepfather, William Thomas Kitt
I have never expressed my love before
When you took us in, opened up your door
You came to me when I needed a dad
I realize this today, which is real sad.
Author notes
After 33 years, I have finally penned a poem to my stepfather who went against his Catholic beliefs and married my Mother, a divorcee with five children from another man, and fought all the way to the Bishop of our Congregation and finally won the right to marry her. They celebrate their 33rd anniversary on July 1st this year (Canada Day).
I have such deep respect for this man who at the age of 32 back in 1971 took on the Catholic Church to marry the woman of his dreams. But because of this faith, certain wars would not be brought up until 33 years later, where we can discuss this openly.
I consider this man more of a father to me than my biological one, but openess and showing of love towards one another in our family was never our strong points and for so long I have had a desire to write something for Dad , who has had a heart of gold, a stern hand and voice, and showed enough compassion and love towards us as if we were his natural children.
Happy Father's Day Dad
