~~Memorial Day~~

Missing image
Today we proudly wave our flag
As a valiant story it tells
Reminding us of all who fought
As Old Glory proudly still prevails~

It flies over many a housetop and ship
Unfurled in all its beauty
As the stars and stripes still proudly wave
Over the men who did their duty~

They fought so we could all be free
How proud we are for all of them
Some left as boys not very old
But all came home as men~

So let us fly our flag with pride
Our nation's been blessed well
As we pay our tribute every year
For all the men who fell~

Author notes

Lots of small flags will be placed on Vetran's graves today
For rememberance.....my father will be among the many
Long may you wave...

    Nice tribute

Appropriate read for the upcoming holiday. Well put. We should be proud and honor the fallen.
While the repeating the words "proud" and "proudly" add emphasis, I found it a bit redundant. Though others may disagree.

Yes, they did their duty and did not complain, and the country lost a great deal, for these men would have contributed much to our society. They paid a terrible price. The country payed a terrible price. We all did.

Memorial day stirs so many emotions in so many people and you brought attention to them {{{{{ Susan }}}}} As i read this , all I can think is " and next year more will have joined the ranks of those that died " , but I am sure the world will NOT be a better place for it , there is too much hatred for us to come out of this free and carefree ( what a shame )
    love you Susan,
    Reenie

This is a tough piece to read. While it was done with your usual excellence... today is such a sad day for so many. Very hard to read that our men die to keep us free, when the truth is so many are dying for reasons few of us believe in.

Memorial day is for remembering those who have died... I do thank you for reminding us.

    Hugs my friend..
    Mary Ann

let us also ensure that america does not continue its wreckless disregard for humanity; effectively stating that the dead died for dollars.

Hi Susan - I'm so pleased you are getting strong again - I expect you need to gain a few pounds LOL from your photos you were too small to begin with . . .

I enjoyed your poem but it is always so easy to be critical with this sort of poem. I began to write one myself – but is was a bit too strong so it is pending for the time being- I have already written several about memorials – Americas WW2 memorial was late in coming but they were also late joining the war so I suppose that is apt – but thank God they did otherwise history would have been very different.

Sadly it was supposed to be the - War To End All Wars . . . you have one line that some Americans families will feel sad about But all came home as men As you know several hundred thousand didn’t come home at all – just a thought. But that is still small compared with the over Fifty Million Foreigners that were killed – Over fifty million. . .it doesn’t bear thinking about but of course we must. – Albert

    Moving and pariotic.

    Dear Susan,
A fine patriotic poem for Memorial Day. I hope though that we hold our fallen in our hearts and memories on every day of the year - they made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us who live on and we should never forget that.

"They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We SHALL remember them." (Laurence Binyon)

And how about reading and commenting on some of mine, hun? Hope you're getting better.
    Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

    applaudable

Susan, a very befitting tribute to all those who have laid their lives in the unrelenting lap of war-those that have gained immortality in death-those that have fallen to rise forever more-I have loved the background that you have chosen and the poem is such a wonderful way of saying to all of them-that u are indeed remembered and are in our hearts always

    OH Susan -
This is fantastic. It brought a tear to my eye. In a time when we hear so many bemoaning our country and our leaders it is nice to read something about taking pride and remembering what a sacrifice it is that these boys make. Even the ones who come back alive are not the same young boys who left.
It is good to see the old Susan back with flair.
    God Bless
    Susan

This is a wonderful tribute on Memorial Day. Thank you for sharing it. I was triggered to run a contest with Memorial Day upon us. I wish now I didn't do it. It turned into an ugly thing for me. This is a beautiful poem. Cheryl

beautiful poem! i am so glad to see pieces about this out here- being proud of our boys and our men... and grateful. i think your poem is lovely- the rhyme is not forced but serves to emphasize the rhyming words, and the few words used convey a lot of meaning. well done!!! and there are more important aspects of this holiday than merely wearing white....

Fitting Memorial Day poem, Sis! So many died fighting to keep our country free. God bless them. I feel very fortunate that I have never lost a friend or a family member that way. I feel very sorry for those who did. In our cemetery, every veteran will have a flag on his or her grave today. Very nice poem!

    Love Ya!

Thank you for writing such a wonderful piece. The rhyme and rhythm work so well as to make a gentle lullaby-like cadence that my heart beat slips into the rhythm of your poem. Blessings and best wishes, richard

    lovely susan...you, and the poem!
luckily, the sun has come out after two days of non-stop
pouring rain. will make it easier for families to visit the graves of their loved ones. i've no graves to visit, as my loved ones were cremated...but you can be sure i'll be thinking of them today, as well as all of the brave male and female veterans who gave their lives for their country.
    all my best to you!

This is a very nice poem Susan, but that isn't a surprise
I feel sorry about the soldiers that lost their lives on so many wars all around the world, and to think that most of the wars could be easily avoid, make me even more sad.
I hope you be ok, my dear friend.
    Loves,
    Mari
