How Free Are We?

How free am I
if to continue to be
I must eat and breathe?

How free can I be,
though able to swim,
I must rise for air
and continue to propel...
all just to breathe?

How true is the cliche:
'Only the dead are free'?

How free am I
if in order to fly
I must borrow steel wings
that take time
and stop me from being
everywhere at once?

--Uncle Greg

UNcle Greg, you have an amazing way of stating the obvious and then twisting it to form true poetic thoughts.

Very profound. You bring up insightful truths about the plight of humanity here. We are all bound by human nature and certain laws of science; but, these constraints can breed unimaginable creativity. If complete freedom was really ours, would possibility hold the same lure for us... would our hearts contain as much passion? These are interesting questions to ponder. You question accepted paradigms here--"safe" and "easy" beliefs of our freedom that are possbily only shallow ideals (?) Great write! I enjoyed this tremendously.

    good

Yes everything has its limitations in this duality of existence. Freedom to be yourself as long as it does not hurt others is also a conditional freedom which good. rethinking took place.

My point here was simply to encourage questioning. Too often, we tend to view freedom as an abstraction, and more often it's not 'freedom' we're really referring to, but rather 'liberty,' which is not quite the same thing:) G-man767

How many would wish to have the opportunity to pose the question? The hungry, the homeless, the incarcerated and I’m sure many more.

But of course you a right – then again could absolute freedom exist?

    A very thought provoking idea.

Yes i must agree ferg, freedom is a state of Mind. Those who are spitual guided can be completly free from all physical life, they can fly the skies without the metal wings, swim the sees and need not breath, walk through fire and shalt not burn, for their spirits, our spirits can take us anywhere it's just the task of allowing our minds to dismantel the physical barriers that we have created and allowing our imaginations to sour with our souls.
    Good write

Hey G-Man, I like this. I think freedom is really a state of mind. And perhaps when we get to the other side all of this will be confirmed (or denied) but while we're here we do as the saying goes, chop wood and carry water.

I like the way you think.

Well said!! So very true, that only the dead are free... But then can the dead truly feel the pains and joys that the living do? Freedom or emotional feelings... a deep question....
