If I Could Paint Your Portrait

Missing image
by Gregg Rowe

If I could paint a portrait
I'd paint a portrait of you
I'd take an egg-white canvas
Turn the background to a blue

With fine cream colour paint
I'd replicate your innocent face
Immortalizing your presence
Lingering in my place

With the most delicate brush
I'd mix brown with rouge
Stroking thick half-moon eyebrows
That make up the real you

With just the thinnest brush
I'd gently stroke your full lashes
Not caring about time
As it forever passes

With the colour chestnut
I'd gingerly brush your eyes
Remembering everything you told me
Hoping it was not lies

With the flashy colour rust
I'd gently stroke your hair
Capturing the alternative style
That you always wear

With an off-cherry red
I'd brush upon full lips
Remembering all those wonderful evenings
When we passionately kissed

But since I cannot paint
Black upon white I write
With words I paint your portrait
Visualizing you on sight

Yes I am a painter...I have started two years ago with no experience and paint in oils, I have just finished my seventh painting and have sold four of them so far...they are in my library under the List: Showing Off My Works in Paintings. Thanks for the encouragment and comment. Gregg

I have often felt like in another life I was a famous visual artist. I have tried my hand at it seriously once or twice and produced fine prints. The words that painted this portrait were clever and left images that the visual artist also captured with his brush. Excellent painted art with words my friend, very beautiful indeed! Your pen as the brush served the painting with great colors and hues of beauty. Good luck with the contest.

I like it and can visualize a hand carefully painting and scrutinizing over brushstrokes and color, being an artist myself. Critically speaking, I think the meter would work a little better if "Hoping it was not lies" changed to "Hoping they were not lies," and the word 'stroke' was used a bit too often, but other than those two things, it was beautiful. Good job. You really did paint with words.

I balance between the two. I paint oils, started two years ago, never painted or drew in my life, started in rehab. My oils are colorful and of nature, my poetry dark and demonic so there is my yin and yan in the arts. I have a few samples of my paintings scattered with my poems, just can't remember which poems they are in so maybe I will make a list that says: Poems with Gregg's original oil in them so people can find them easier, especially me . Have sold three already since I started painting. (One is Green Aspen Morning, my first oil painting, oh yeah Guy's Portrait is another I will try and find the others and make a list for everyone to see.

Oh Gregg......this is so wonderful, I loved it!!!! You see, I paint as well as write. I am not sure which I do better. Right now, I am writing more than painting. I give it more time. There needs to be an AllPainting. Cheryl
