Twenty Five Collective Nouns for Animals

Missing image
by Gregg Rowe

A murder of crows
A chowder of cats
A leap of leopards
A sloth of bears
A rafter of turkeys

A smack of jellyfish
A skull of foxes
A labour of moles
A peep of chickens
A crash of rhinoceros

A paddling of ducks
A siege of herons
A rag of colts
A draft of hogs
A charm of finches

A trip of goats
A knot of toads
A shrewdness of apes
A gaggle of geese
A troop of kangaroos

A pride of lions
A watch of nightingales
A parliament of owls
A muster of peacocks
An exaltation of larks

"Chowder of cats"? I think I had that once at an oriental restaurant...

The first and last here have always been two of my favorites. : )

Reminds me of 'General Knowledge' days in my old school...We would have to memorize all sorts of classings, including fobias and -ologies...all in the name of fun, a great list, that couldn't be compiled by just anyone..

Sam: I like your suggestions so perhaps write another poem using this in a Bible Story like say, hmm, Noah's Ark , but I think that penning it in this fashion gives it a musical feel and children would learn it faster by the shortness of the lines, yet I could see it in a story for older children to learn it so yeah, maybe I will sit down and write it. Good idea!

PS: In editing this I just realized how ambivalent that is because if they are ready learned it when they would young, then why would they need to learn it again when they are older.

    Don't mind me,

A great list...if you added a story line you could make it rhyme...
    Well done.

Very clever, Gregg! Not only clever but interesting and enlightening. I think you met all the requirements of writing a list poem, rhyme or not. So, good luck in the contest!

    Cool.
Very clever group-names. I like how they match the characteristics of the animals.

Sorry about the rhyming part, but it would take me years to make a poem like that, but what I have done is collected them in such a way that the groups have a hidden message with the nouns of feelings and emotions that we experience as humans.

Very clever, I happen to love collective nouns, so you very much amused me! I wish it had rhymed, but I know that would have been extremely difficult!
