H. p.

"Be well rounded", she'd often preach,
You all know I'm here to teach,
Proper English and classic lit
And even how to write a bit,
Poems and essays and short stories,
A research paper, your crowning glory,
Proper spelling and punctuation,
These may cause you some frustration,
and one more thing, before I quit,
Don't say "ain't", you'll get a demerit!

Author notes

My high school compositon/creative writing teacher was my favorite teacher.  Her name was Helen Peters (more affectionately known as HP).  She introduced us to a lot of classic literature and the importance of being well rounded individuals.

My favorite lit teacher pulled me off to show me extra stuffs about the Transcendental period (which I loved, and which she'd guessed correctly, which means she paid attention to me, which is uber-cool). Special teachers are incredibly hard to find. This is a humorous and appreciative tribute.

    Much respect,
    Sarah

This was a wonderful poem, the rhyme, the flow, the content all added up to a smile on my face

A sweet tribute to one of those once in a lifetime teachers that a lot of us are lucky enough to have. I had two wonderfully supportive and enriching teachers in my final year of High School- and they are partially responsible for where I am today.

    Nicely done.

Hehe, HP sounds like a cool lady. I'm well rounded but it's more from food than any teacher I know, very nice poem. I really did enjoy it, good luck in the contest, Dave.

My teacher was one of the "do not say 'okay'!"...it was either, yes or all right.

This is a cute poem that shows the influence that the right kind of teacher can have.

Welcome to Allpoetry and good luck in the contest

As soon as I found this website (thanks to my big sis Tawnya) I started recalling HS English and writing classes. They were the best. She definately made it interesting. Maybe that is why I actually remember some of the things she taught.

This made me smile. It is 11:12 pm, and I am sitting here at my computer screen recalling my high school English teachers and comparing them to my current Eng 101 professor now.

I remember my fav HS english teacher well. She was a unique individual, always bouncing around - creative thinker, always encouraged us to write write write...She is the one who got me seriously considering my poetic abilities rather than just writing for the hay of it.

Anyway, great entry here- took me back

I like your Helen Peters - English was my best and favourite subject at school too. One lesson I always looked forward to.
I hope HP gets to read this someday.
Good entry and welcome to Allpoetry
(check line 4 seems to be a double up here)

He he- I'm an English teacher and (whispers) off duty i say 'aint', 'never dun nuffink' ect'. I really liked this because it described the breadth of a subject and the way it MUST be linked into the world to create useful art, skills and development. No good knowing how to write if you've got nothing to write about! (Oh dear- I think that's my 'teacher saying' we all have one you know!)

LOL! My favourite teacher was my English teacher, and I have some really fond memories of her and her classes! As my mum used to say "ain't, Ain't in the dictionary" not that I ever checked though... lol
Lovely bouncy little piece, I loved it
Good luck and thanks for entering

Hey, Sis, you know I like your poem. HP was my favorite teacher too. I remember those demerits. Never got one though, lol. Good luck in the contest.
