I Noticed...

If
someone cares for you
they are thoughtful,
considerate of
your feelings,
have empathy
for pain,
knowing
silence
is cruel.
How busy
can one
be that
one
word
is
too
much?

The
not kind
are not
True!

But
this
IS

Author notes

With thanks to MargaretG for her one-liner wisdom...that I needed to remember:
"If you loved me you would be kind. If you were kind I would have noticed."

And..

"No person is your friend who demands your silence, or denies your right to grow."
~ Alice Walker

My third comment on this poem, and every time it impacts deeper. I think the title says it all, and nothing else needs to be said - it is the most powerful part of the poem.

    Thoughtful

Love is always there, but only if it is noticed. Love unseen is just like a majestic, 1000 year old Oak tree, that no one even knows exists. You did beautifully with your write here, it reminds me to remember little things and big things as well, maybe even notice when someone shows me some love, lol.

Thanks for the reminder, my friend,

How true...I almost lost a good friend because I was just too caught up in my own life to remember to be a friend back...One word IS all it takes. A very inspirational write, and one to consider long after being read. Love, Lane

Indeed your words ring true. We have to learn to somehow.Be willing to leave ourselfs unguarded and step out fearlessly into the open first. This is really deep and I agree. Simply put but beautiful, and the one-word lines are very effective for the message. I think we can do so much with the smallest of gestures.

omg did I read this before? This has become my favorite. Why didn't I mean you eons ago- we share so much of the same perspective om life- and I have been forced to live with people who don't(hence the reason for so many of my poems that talk about being trapped). Wonderful words. I don't think this was the contest poem you meant to send me to though, right?

This brings to mind such a lovely interaction between Mozart and the King in the movie "Amadeus" - please forgive any mis-quotes if they appear..but it went something like this:
Mozart had been asked by the king to compose a piece.. Mozart does this perfectly brilliant composition, which he performs for the king and his advisors.. the king's response is :
"...ah...yes..well, very nice Mozart..but it's just not quite right..."
Mozart responds : "What exactly wasn't right your majesty..?"
"well....*coughs*..um..there's just too many notes..yeah, that's it..just too many notes!" said the king
"Exactly which notes would you have me leave out your majesty......." Mozart asks.

i agree with the general public (at least the ones who have commented on this) that this has a good message. however, i'm not really a fan of the straightforward-ness in this poem. while it doesn't necessarily appeal to me, others seem to find ample worth in it.

How very true Wilber's words are! I am amazed at the depth of his perception. Sometimes we need matters to be spelled out before us, in order to enable us to add it permanently to our awareness. This most definitely was such an instant for me! We have treacherously been conditioned into believing the properties of life are simple; they are not in any way! Reality is complex and bizarre often - a marsh from where we will never return if we do not know our way around. Still, it is better to die there exploring, than to just ignorantly submit to the dreaded lies of this illusion. I aim to surivive however, I am now a long way from distant and I am not even looking for a way back anymore. Thank you for allowing me to ponder this precious endeavour of the mind. It is very important to me!

Yes, Chris...this is a tricky one too...there are no 'pat' answers to all things. As a sage once said, "Not always so." Kindness comes from empathy, understanding and consideration between people. We also discipline our children out of kindness and concern for their wellbeing and safety. Compassion has been misrepresented and misunderstood by many also. Here's a favourite quote from Ken Wilber, a prolific writer on real, and applied, spiritual matters:

"Real compassion kicks butt and takes names, and it is not pleasant on certain days. If you are not ready for this fire, then find a new-age, sweetness-and-light, soft speaking, perpetually smiling teacher, and learn to re-label your ego with spiritual-sounding terms. But stay away from those who practice real compassion, because they will fry your ass, my friend. What most people mean by 'compassion' is: please be nice to my ego. Well, your ego is your own worst enemy, and anybody being nice to it is not being compassionate to you."

As you see, this guy gets to the nitty gritty of it in an entertainingly graphic, yet accurate, way.

Kindness is among the most underrated powers mankind has. The ones who mistake this quality for weakness, invariably overrate the cold mind as a condition to be succesful in life. Society does little about correcting this tragic error; many of its mechanisms and structures seem to encourage this ignorant point of view. It is definitely contributing to the sad situation the world is in today. I admire you for sharpwittedly confronting us with such matters. But cold minds are rarely open to matters that conflict with views that continuously confirm the reasons for their 'success' in today's world. Perhaps we should shoot them..., oh, but that would not be kind... Which leads me to this question? Are we allowed to apply unkind measures to resore kindness' place in the awareness of mankind?

I know the answer to this inquiry, but I must admit, sometimes some answers are quite tempting... (this shows you how ignorant I am ). Thank you for creating and sharing this perceptive exercize of the mind!

I have always lived that way, Myra. However, there is no coersion in Love. When it is locked out, it moves on. It does not mean I allow another's behaviour to influence my own. Friendship and forgiveness are always available to anyone willing to take it. They will not take it if they don't change; and they won't change unless they choose to.
    I appreciate your thoughts

    Dearest Gennelle

I think the importance of your words have many angles ... For me kindness and truth start within the own heart. The secret lies within endurance and being focused. I've posted the following words:

    i wept for you
within small hours of my heart
    whilst you slept

Sometimes God gives the green leaf as proof to the dove only after the tree had peeked. One must persist in your efforts to be a good friend, even to those who do not respond ... For the sake of Christ ...

    Hugs.

    Myra

    Inspiring

I have not read their comments yet
    to keep my opinion free
to view form as meaning here.
    Elegance aside, I see
    a slender poem, but complete,
    focused on reality,
    narrowing my own like sunny
    shaft through adversity.

It says it all without trying,
    unfettered by superfluity
    clarified by simplicity
    that bypasses faulty
    words, phraseology
    with difficulty,
    perspicacity
    with only
    paucity...

    finding
    truly
    tiny
    key:

    Truth.
The biggest thing of all. --Dee

    Brava!

I go back to St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 for a definition of love. Kindness is basic, as is patience. Love does not count wrongs, and anyone who does is trapped in their own hurt and unable to love. I believe that if something cannot be said kindly, it is not true, and you have said that in your way too. What are we to do with this love that is dammed up and inexpressible? There lies the angst. Love the ones who love us!!

So true and so great write!
Many times all what we need is a simple gesture to know that someone really cares, and how many times it is denied.
It is so easy to be kind, and yet we still have to look hard to find kindness.
