Wolf call

on the night
of the silver moon
they came silent footed
led by an ancient female

it was hard
the young ones faltered
but she led without hesitation
they left the plains
climbed high into the hills
until there was nothing
between them
and the sky
then she left them

afraid to be alone
they pleaded with her
ran at her heels
whimpered
she was unmoved
slipped through a cleft
in the rock
followed an old path
higher and higher
the young ones left far behind now
their voices faded

at the highest point she listens
the call comes
from the distant hills
reverberating around her
she lifts her head
replies
a joyfilled howl
to greet the ancestors
it is her time.

I've always related to wolves ever since I read the jungle book. I hope I have the courage to do this when my time comes. WOOOAAAAHHHHHH! sputnik

I think she is going on the journey of death! I wrote this as a contest piece in a very short time, about 15 minutes I think, and haven't worked on it since, but that was what seemed to be happening.

Thanks honey - only just found this comment btw, my messages haven't been appearing on the home page so I've been missing them. You know I think all animals know when its their time to die, and we do too if we allow ourselves to tune in, don't let 'civilisation' get in the way. Mumxx

Thanks Hannah - don't be scared of them, they are truly magnificent and have an amazing social structure, and are much wiser than us - they only kill when they need to - for food or to protect themselves - never just because it seems like a good idea - and they never torture!!
The poem wasn't really very good, it was for a one hour contest and I did it in about 15 minutes! I liked what came through though and will try and find time to work on it and improve it.
Hope you are having a good spring and enjoying life. I haven't had much time for poetry lately but hope to have more in the next few weeks.

A good friend of mine is obsessed with wolves. Frankly, they scare me, but, oh well.
Lovely write, very mysterious and reads like a legend. Beautiful.

this was a very enchanting story...I think it's about an old female going to greet her time of death, but im not quite sure. It could be destorted by my medication but i liked it a lot. Beautiful job.
