A Canadian Summer Carnival at the Farmer's Market

Missing image
by Gregg Rowe

Between the Helicopter Ride
and the Twister
We grabbed a stemmed hot dog
Vapours rising in the heated air
Layered with relish
white onions
sauté brown
savouring

After the frightening episode
through the Haunted House
We disembark
greeted by fresh
fragrance of salted butter
(extra butter for me) popcorn
Kernels golden brown
corn painted yellow

While we rode the Ferris Wheel
holding hands and cuddling
we think of devouring
pink cotton candy
plump and full
as it melts in our mouths
red, sticky, gone

Walking through the House of Mirrors
we were greeted by the sun
unheeding in our eyes
Listening to the ushers yell
'Peanuts, chocolate bars, chips
Fifty cents each'

We experience the Moonwalk
After ordering a hamburger
'Toutes les garnsih'
Doused in speckled
white crystals
dance off crisp
golden French fries

The Pancake Contest
oversupplied with home-made
quebeçoise maple syrup
Washed down with lukewarm water

We head to the beer stand
After being tossed around
in the Salt and Pepper
Ending the afternoon
with a spin on the Roller coaster

As the mid-western sun
starts to set
we pass the Bumper Cars
and think of our stomachs

Mmmm- this really captures the feel of carnival/festival food feel. I love this kind of food. Really beautiful imagery- I was there with you, walking and tasting and laughing. Incredible!!!

I loved this poem. You done an excellent job on writing it. I liked how you mixed in some French with the English. I took a year of French in high school so I don't know all that much of it, but I figured it out. Keep up the excellent work, Gregg!!

Not to my knowledge although they won their rights to form a union, which is about time, since these kids pay for college and university and put up with a lot of fun, but many problems during their summer work.

I love 'sirup d'erable' but 'très sugre' for me

Every year I visit the amusement park sites that are now travelling instead of a permanent site, but if you wish an afternoon like this 'La Ronde' on Nun's Island in downtown Montréal can give you this trip

Alright, I want a funnel cake now. Can I have one? This was beautiful. I felt like I was there too. I was the one dishing up the hot dogs. J/K I love amusement parks, and you did an awesome job my friend describing it. You actually made me quite hungry. I don't know if I can't find that kind of food at 3:59 am in the morning.

    Enjoyed it!

Whew! What a day! I was there. You didn't see me but
weren't the fries good? Transfats everywhere, but hey,
delicious! Glad to be back though...

Well written, very evocative of many many amusement parks!
    Thanks for the memories. --Dee
