When you are young the world is so much different
than when you grow old.
Your young eyes cannot see the hate, the scorn, the pride
that we see now.
Or perhaps, you see it all the more clearly.
To children
the world is black and white.
Every princess has a prince. Everyone has a happily ever after.
You are either an angel, or a very very bad person.
That is not the case for when you grow old.
The solid yes/no's of the young mind fade into maybes and i-don't-knows as the world grows bleaker, and grayer,
more indifferent.
If the world could see as a child:
we would all be better off.

Yes, it is sad that children have to grow up and see the not so beautiful things around them; prejudice, hate, despair, etc. Children's worlds are so innocent, and we as adults try to protect them as much as we can, but many children just want to grow up and in today's society they do that too quickly. Your last two lines are very true...

Thanks! I like the last two lines as well. I was rather surprised with myself. I would like to write more poems like this, but school is very distracting these days.

Ahhhhh You sound like me!

ahaha!
How do I sound like you? is that a good thing? XD -

Cause, you are all depressing! But "Every princess has a prince. Everyone has a happily ever after?"
..... But not everyone has a prince, and not every tale is happily ever after. That can be what kills a person. You know why I cut my hair, right? Because damsels in distress will become crones in distress unless they realize that no one is going to reach them, no matter how long they grow their hair. -

I know I know. You've written that line numerous times. I practically memorized it. ^^

Haha, thanks. Its so true, though!

very well written poem of the innocence of children. not just the children themselves as innocence but as in the way they all see the world. a very interesting take on the prompt. a visionary in itself! nicely done!
my favorite line is:
"Every princess has a prince. Everyone has a happily ever after."
most children are read fairy tales at night before they go to bed. they are basically told that in these stories this is the way it goes. it was a beautifully written line.
thanks for entering my first contest! good luck!

Oh, gee.
Thank you! The honorable mention really brought up my confidence. This was the first poem I have ever submitted to a contest before. I will be doing more in the future! Thanks again, and have an enjoyable holiday!
