Best Friends
Maggie and Jack were best friends,
All through their high school days.
Seldom mean and always fun,
Mags and Jack just had their ways.
When asked by friends just how they made it,
“It’s meant to be,” they’d say.
Jack was on the football team,
And Mags the top of class.
They’d always pick each other up,
When they got knocked down on their ass.
To everyone who knew the two,
It seemed that this would last.
They called each other, just to talk,
“I love you” for “good-bye”.
Best friends are always there for you,
Jack when Maggie had to cry.
They helped each other in hard times,
Like when Mags heard Jack’s dad would die.
Yet one night they were at a party,
Both with all-new dates.
Maggie didn’t drink, but her date did,
She knew he couldn’t drive straight.
She had to leave soon, to meet curfew,
And it was getting late.
Jack offered to drive, but her date refused,
He yelled that he could do it.
Jack saw the fear in Maggie’s eyes,
If he went on, he would be hit.
But he decided to follow them on the road,
Jack wasn’t one to quit.
So when the Honda hit a tree,
Going 80 where it should be 55,
Jack jumped out of his own car,
And prayed she’d be alive.
He cursed himself as he ran over,
WHY did he let him drive?
Jack was afraid to move Maggie,
For fear that she’d get worse hurt,
But he stayed with her and held her hand,
As her blood soaked through his shirt.
For Jack had always been there for her,
Through smiles and tears and dirt.
The ambulance wasn’t fast,
And Maggie’s breath was slow.
Tears were leaking from Jack’s eyes,
But they had no place to go.
At the moment, Jack and Maggie realized,
They’d had more love than most could know.
Both Jack and Maggie died that night,
On highway 44.
Jack couldn’t save his angel,
And he wanted life no more.
But we know one thing now is really true,
Friends like them are WHAT life is for.
