Beautiful

Beautiful

I look around upon my entry,
He’s sees me standing there.
He grins at me as he examines,
My clothes, my face, my hair.

I can’t help but ask a stupid question,
“Do I look like I should?”
The only answer I get back?
“Girl, you look real good!”

Five years later from that day,
We’re now high-school sweethearts.
Through dances, dates, and hard times,
We’ve been together—and apart.

But now I ask him a question,
“Baby—do I look okay?”
And of course he says to me,
“You look better every day!”

60 years and four kids more,
We’ve been “forever” 50 years.
He holds my hand as I cry now,
So I smile through my tears.

Now it’s the first time he says what I want,
As I lie here and bleed,
“Sweetie, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL,”
And I know that’s all I need.
