you are important, an ocean
to a mermaid. but all i have are your
blue footprints, small as an ear
or the sound of a seashell.
i am lost, lyrics with no wind,
words with no voice. a river
with no corse. you grew upon
my foundation, becoming
78 percent water, spreading
yourself across my earth.
but now i am a drought,
sputtering, i can not even cry.
we lowered you in, an anchor.
(but what’s the use of a buried
anchor that will only tug
on my wandering heart?)
your white coffin,
i can’t imagine how it harbors
you. i can almost hear you crashing
against its wake. it rained as if the oceans
were draining.
please, stop the sound of flowers
hitting your grave. waves constantly
reminding.
