Portraits Of What Once Was

I have closed my eyes too many times
And sighed in the pouring rain
I have danced in the breeze like wind chimes
And then burned in Hell again

For in the chasm of my young heart
Portraits are hung on white walls
Paintings of those from whom I am apart;
I could not forget them all

Yet as I look upon those faces
I fear they will turn to gravestones
I wish to be back in young places
Where our friendship could be grown

I see before me phantoms of friends
Mere remnants of what once was
Yet all I pray is for amends
And the redemption of my flaws

For every grave tells an epic tale
Of a life that was once here
For they are portraits of gains and fails
To all those who held them dear

And all around me I see ghosts dance
In writhing, beautiful spins
But I keep praying for my one chance
For our love to again begin

Tears fall when I look into your eyes
And I long for time to pause
I look in my heart, where friendships lie
And see portraits of what once was…

Author notes

I wrote this poem about old friendships that I long to continue, but because now I am in college it's hard to keep up with them. I did have a specific friend in mind when I wrote this poem and I wish that everything could just heal. I'm so frustrated with myself and how hard it is to keep in touch.

I can feel the frustration at what is lost... friendships are forever... and when you actually can not keep up with someone you actually care for just because of distance it is beyond... every explanation. I consider myself lucky that I still have contact with them all and wherever we are we surely get together once every two months.... It simply is an awesome feeling.
The following line are specially beautiful...
For in the chasm of my young heart
Portraits are hung on white walls
    Paintings of those from whom I am apart;
I could not forget them all

Thank you for sharing this beautiful write...

    excellent

I've read a few of your pieces and you have a unique style it's very rhythmic and it just flows so naturally this piece is no exception to that pattern

the emotion is just pouring out of this piece and excellent word choice you can feel that it is written to multiple subjects yet one in particular and I really like that it gives it direction without becoming stale

    very well written piece

i can feel the yearning and regret from your words. your opening stanza is perfectly written and catches the attention immediately. "Tears fall when i look into your eyes", this line took me out of it a little bit because your story here is about the people you're apart from, so if you could "look into their eyes", it's a little too intimate and doesn't really flow well with the rest of this piece. just my thoughts. but apart from that, nicely done!

Friendship is long lasting, but sometimes it is fragile as well. I found this piece to be full of emotion. I hope you get a happy ending. ~gypsy~

    :)

This poem was beautiful, really contemplative. Makes the reader think, and that in itself is admirable.

The following piece is very personal to me, I am trying to get as many poeple to read and comment it as possible.
