I sit looking at the fireplace
while the warmth goes through to my soul;
holding onto your hands as though to a lifeline.
You have spoken for the first time
of your feelings for me.
“I love you” was the last thing I expected to hear
tonight. We have been together
in a long distance relationship
for so long and both a bit timid.
But this first date has gone on all day
as we ice skated in Central Park
and ate hot dogs from a street vendor.
Sitting here like this sipping our champagne
I thought you would be ready to take it slowly
And think it out more. But the firebricks have
Made you heady, or was it the drink?
Either way, I’m stunned speechless.
I have had to still my tongue all day NOT to say that first.
Could it be that the fire has a romantic influence on us
and you will change your mind when the fire is dead?
Will your heart belong to me forever as an
“I love you” suggests? I hope so.
For now I will hold your hands and kiss them
as I softly whisper through my tears,
“I love you, too.”
