The Edge

So this is it! The very edge,
I tripped, I fell, onto a ledge,
and here I cling and look below,
If I should slip then down I go.

And what would matter if I die,
I would no longer have to try,
the thought of that just makes me sigh,
I would no longer have to lie.

I've given of my best you see,
but happiness was not to be,
so now I seek another way,
if I must live another day.

My mind exhausted, I must play
another part, so that my heart,
can grow in love, and like a Dove,
just fly to where it wants to be,
and soar to heaven to be free.

This seems to flow with a sense of almost dark humour, and I love the rhyme in this piece. It's very captivating and catchy, yet heart-felt. I hope that life picks up soon for you, and you can utilise your new-found understanding of the darker side of life to appreciate the light

Thankyou so much for your wise words, and your kind thoughts. When we open pandora's box life can become very interesting and even a little frightening. But that is much better than sitting on the lid.

    Well done here David.

There are so many ledges in life or cliffs as I like to call them. Sometimes it's the same one we keep finding ourselves facing and are faced with the decision of whether to jump off into the unknown or return to the same familiar cycle which will ultimately lead us back to the same spot. We need to jump to grow.

    Good luck in the contest.

So true Pixie, I think we must keep falling down the same hole (in the road), until we begin to learn wisdom, thankyou for your lovely thoughts

    Very profound & thought-provoking...

I think we all feel exactly as you do at times, David. I'm reading a book on Decartes' "Meditations on First Philosophy" (translated by Laurence J. Lafleur), which describes the human condition as you've painted here - and his writings are quite heartening (and believable). Your poem just reminded me of our limitations, and also, our yearning and hope for peaceful fulfillment, which may be a higher calling of the spiritual soul. Good work, thank you for sharing.
    Peace Always,
    Cyn

      Hi there Cyn
That book sounds like quite alot to take in, but facinating nevertheless. The human condition does not seem to change much over time. At least on a mental level. No matter how rich or successful we become, there is still a deep spiritual yearning which drives us, as you put it so well. Learning to be honest with myself and observing exactly what is driving my desires and thoughts is my current challenge. Not being the puppet forever dancing on a string. Thankyou for your thoughtfull comments, this poem was written all in a rush, responding to the contest request to write how you really feel. I have so many books waiting to be read, but I will keep the one you are reading in mind.
      Many thanks
      David

You're having an ego-attack. I know the feeling. Sometimes, I feel so tired of it all and I look around and see a lot of suffering - self made. When we give in and see that matter doesn't really matter, then we are free to enjoy it as the temporal thing it is. Let's all learn to 'play another part' afterall we are actors on the world stage. -- Bonita

LOL, good reply Bonita, and thankyou, sometimes I just get so fed up of trying to understand the mess we are in. I am sure that trying to understand is the wrong response, at the human mundane level at which most of us live our lives. There is no possibility of understanding. Of course the response to this would be that we must raise our game and become more spiritual. Trying too hard and fretting about failings - all part of the human condition, - the reason why we are here I suppose. thanks again for your help and support.
