One for Sorrow

I know you,
Pied jester
Restless chatterer and collector,
You are not what you seem.
Beady-eyed seducer
Lush in blue and green
Your iridescent hues.

Beware your sudden moves,
Ravager, Herod,
Slaughterer.
Croaking crow-kin,
Eater of flesh
Living or dead, it's all the same to you.
Killer.

Author notes

Written in about 5 minutes after a visit to my local park on a sunny autumn morning. The magpie is a common bird in the UK, a member of the crow family renowned for stealing bright objects and raiding the nests of smaller birds. The title alludes to a well-known rhyme about a superstition based on the number of birds seen at one time: "One for sorrow, two for joy" etc.

Magpies have a reputation for being a thief, but I can never see one without saying "Good day Mr. Magpie", as I was told it was bad luck not to acknowledge them.
You have captured their characteristics well, even down to the chattering, or as we say "chyicking".

I didn't need to read your author notes to know what it was you were talking about.

All the best and welcome to AP.
