Pretend You Care One Last Time

Before you turn your back on me and quickly walk away,
without a thought or concern for me; closing your ears when I ask you to stay,

won't you just pause for a second, and think back on the times -
when we used to run, and chase, and play, and all the mountains that we climbed.

How my eyes lit up when you came home and we'd cuddle on the stair.
Or when you settled down to watch tv, I'd lie loyally by your chair.

New boyfriends had to understand that I'd been in your life for years,
and when they couldn't take to me, my fur soaked up your tears.

But then *he* came along and you - you fell straight to his arms.
I tried to warn you of the snare but you couldn't see past his charms.

And now he's convinced you that it's time to have me put to sleep -
so that you two can be alone without a dog to keep.

Don't leave me here, alone and cold, please! surely it's a crime!
At least hold me close to you as I go..
So I can pretend you care just one last time.

Author notes

13. Pretend You Care One Last Time

A dog has been brought to the vets by his owner to be put to sleep because her life is changing, and influences are pressurising her to do it. This happens so often; although many owners hand their dogs to the pound to be rehomed... Heartbreaking for the animals who just don't understand what's happening

I love animals so much (yes I'ma dork) and this write brought tear's to my eyes. It is sad how people seem to just throw them away as if they are nothing, when they have more love to give than most humans could ever hope to. Damn, this brought out a lot of emotion and memories. Great write, made me cry
