he tried to explain
that the carpeted stairs
were meant to cushion my fall
but i didn't stumble or trip
i was shoved
he convinced me
to tell the neighbors
that i accidentally
bumped into the door
but it opens and shuts
the same way
and his left hook
is far more powerful
than his right
he told my parents
that i slipped on wet leaves
in the drive-way
and he felt guilty
for not raking them up
after the rain
but we have no trees in our yard
neither do the tenants
on either side of us
lots of flowers
grow in our gardens though
i picked some yesterday
placed them by his tombstone
pretty grave decorations
to mark the first year anniversary
of my self-defense action

I wonder how he explained this when people ask
"You got flowers for knocking her about."
"The y come back with I suppose you got a trophy also."
"I bet she loved you to death also"
The guessing just keeps going on...mac

A powerful write.
Clever euphemism for violence and roses. It's a sad thing, but we all know it happens. He may have a powerful left, but he has NO right. People are not for hitting! For it's one, two, three strikes you're out at the old ball game.
You didn't pull any punches with this one, Sis. Starkly effective.

I must say of all the very very wonderful pieces I've read for this contest, this one
almost leaves me at a loss for words to describe how much I LOVE IT!!!
You took me to a place I never want to be again with this. Man oh man do I feel this.
Hell I can smell the flowers. The last stanza really did it for me. Thank you so much for this entry. Now off to my self defense class. LOL!!

i think this is the most happiest & beautiful tombstone i've ever seen flowers laid upon. a wonderful poem of strength and growth.

The Beauty comes from the strength to be able to take action....not many can do that, and they wind up beneath six feet of dirt before he ever realizes his sickness.....if ever -
Thank you for bringing this topic back out in poetic Tone and taste for others to beware of those who have that trait about them.....wonderful write and great take on the Prompt, Renee

By the title, I was expecting something completely different. There's strength in your words that I admire and applaud. Even more so if this is your story.
