A Country Thanksgiving Menu

Price of Gasoline - One Arm and One Leg

Price of Meal - Time and Effort

Time Spent With Family - Priceless

Up at five o’clock for a deer hunting trip
Eggs, bacon, toast and coffee to sip
Into the woods at the cold break of dawn
Hunt until noon and head on back home

Sit and visit until the bird meal is served
Eat like a fool till your stomach is curved
Try to watch football but fall fast asleep
Wake up at four and up on your feet

Grab your gun and go hunting again
Never mind the rain and freezing wind
Finally see a deer and take a shot
Shaking so hard you miss by a lot

Head back home so mad you could spit
Track mud in the house, wife throws a fit
Eat cold turkey between pieces of bread
Hot coffee and aspirin for the pain in your head

Visit with folks who are still hanging around
Nancy, Robert and old Granny Brown
Mother-in-law gives a piece of her mind
Keep your mouth shut and try to be kind

Think of the things that you’re grateful for
Good food to eat and no wolves at the door
Family and friends welcomed into your house
Two healthy kids and a sweet, loving spouse

A place for your head when it’s time to rest
The love of those near, even if they are pests
Gather around for a fine evening feast
Remember the ones who now are deceased

Pray for the souls who are lost and alone
Those who need family and a warm, loving home
Plead for the safety of those gone to war
Ask that next year they won’t fight any more

Finish the meal and say your goodbyes
Clean all the dishes and cover the pies
Then off to bed, turn off all the lights
One final prayer for those driving at night

Author notes

Maybe not a menu in the strictest sense but more of a menu of a country Thanksgiving day.

Excellent! Very creative "menu". I like that you created something different for a traditional holiday menu. I give thanks daily for the creativity I am allowed. You deserve the gold. I heard that it's about 1100.00 per ounce now!

this was most excellent, it made me think fondly of turkey day and all the things going on at once, some you don't realize until you've reflected on it.. love the imagery and damn..i can almost taste the food! good stuff my friend..

Thank ya kind sir. Glad ya enjoyed it. All families have their own ways of celebrating certain occasions and this seems to hold true for most country families in our part of the world. However, family is family no matter where you are.
Thanks again for your kind words. Always appreciated.

Thanks. I realize this was written from a man's point of view and while they're hunting, watching sports or asleep in a chair, the women are working their sweet fingers to the bone to get the important part done. It really doesn't seem fair but it does seem to be a time honored tradition.

'the love of those near, even if they are pests', my favourite line of a great poem. How we should take the time to appreciate people close to us, even if they drive us nuts! Being an Aussie, I don't have the experience of Thanksgiving, but it sounds as it must be a lot like family Christmases over here!
Best of luck in the contest

Thanks my friend. Thanksgiving is like any family gathering no matter where one lives. There always seems to be a few you would rather see leave than show up but they're still family. Maybe they're there just to help us understand how good things are even when we think otherwise.

I am thoroughly impressed that you should have any pies left to cover, my Friend. Sounds rather like a few Thanksgiving meals I've attended in recent years, as well. Good luck in the contest, Scribe.

Thank you my friend. If I hadn't developed diabetes several years ago, there wouldn't be any pies left.

Awww. Poor puppy. Well, surely some sweet soul has discovered recipes for a diabetic pie that you CAN lay to waste.

Oh trust me, my wife has found many fine sugar free recipes. None of the family would touch the first sugar free pie she made. The next year, one person tried it, they told others and I ended up only getting one piece. LOL
          Bless my poor little heart.

Thank you kind sir. Sometimes it's a menu for disaster if the women get tired of the men doing nothing to help.
