The Best Day of My Life

Missing image

I'm three years old

my favorite things are crayons,

ice cream and footed pajamas.

Leo the lion is my best friend.

After I brush my teeth and say my prayers,

Mom tucks us both in

so he can watch over me all night,

since my Daddy's gone off to fight

all the bad guys overseas.

Every morning and every night I pray

then look out the window to see

if Daddy has come back home to me.

Today was the best day of my life

because when I looked out the window

Daddy was there smiling at me.

This is delightful. Spent last weekend with my 3 year old grandson. Stings a bit, they live far away.

Allie, this is such a beautiful and yet stark reminder of the the reality of war and skirmish. Behind the simplicity of the child's reality, you pack immense power that really rattles to the core. Tremendous and well deserving of the trophy. Congrats.

      Thank you for the compliment.

I'm very sorry that your guy has to leave soon... I understand that you just want him to stay. I am much too selfish and neurotic to have a man in the military. When my husband and I first met, he had just finished sniper training and was planning on enlisting in the military or Secret Service.

Selfishly, I said that I would break up with him if he did.

The truth is, I just couldn't bear the thought of him being put in harm's way or being away from me for so long... I really wouldn't have broken up with him. Or maybe I would have? I don't know...

Anyway, I hope things work out for you guys and I'll keep you both in my thoughts.

      Thanks again.

    'grats on the Silver

when I read 'footed pajamas' I had a flash of 'City of Angels'; the young child Nicholas Cage takes "home" loved footed pajamas and I think she was around that age in the movie too - rather adorable to see it here as well

this whole poem is softly sweet, innocent and plain beautiful; what child doesn't adore seeing their Daddy come home, I know I was confused when mine did when I was 3 but theres too long a story behind that

    Bravo on a beautiful poem!
    made me smile this morning
