Twenty Two Pound Turkey

It was the inevitable,
like watching the parade.
Mom put on T.V. volume
raised as high as the law allowed,
so she could heard what they were
describing while she cooked
her heart out in the kitchen.

It was the inevitable.
Dad nagging us, wanting us to
put our heads together.
Guess the turkey's weight.
Mom in-between puffs of her
cigarette and checking if
the bird was brown yet.
Trying to help us or impress us.
Depending on your slant
of the whole situation by telling us.

How much stuffing she had to
shove up its butt,
to fill its gut.

Her probably thinking
there was a math formula
we were taught in school.
Stuffing equal pie r square
equal mass turkey weight
type thing.

Who cared how much the damn thing
weight, or for that matter.
How much stuffing was shoved
up its rectum
before it hit our plates.

I and my brothers just wanted
this part of this day to end.
This special day.
We were forced to eat as a family.
And give thanks that we could afford this
twenty two pound nightmare.

Creativity and time to ponder in your words is how you get my attention.....I really enjoyed this....a lot!

My Grandparents raised me for several years when I was homeless as a child.....and the cigarette thing you mentioned is hilarious as I saw my grandma in my mind doing the same thing......good luck with your entry!

Interesting take on the holiday. Hard to think of "stuffing up it's butt", the stuffing is my favorite part. I always enjoyed the holidays. The only thing I found a bit depressing was the hours it took to cook and the mere minutes it took everyone to eat. Seems like the eating should get equal time.
