Look Over Your Shoulder

Primrose promises littered the walkway
gleaming in their pink ideology
and everything was sun-kissed
laid out like a tiled walkway
for us to skip down hand in hand.

There were no fences around my heart
an open yard waiting for a gentle hand to tend it
and every time I stepped towards the door
you were right beside me
laughing as the stars lit up in your eyes
that moonburst of happiness that sparked between us
like static electricity clinging to our legs.

At least that's what I see when I look back over my shoulder
funny how the world changes
when you're hanging by the door step
I dream of the things that could be just beyond the lintel
but handle in hand I am afraid
will you take that step forward with me
or are you too busy playing in the front yard?
