Santa in his suit of red holding forth a toy,
In his Christmas grotto to a child wild eyed with joy.
Gathering thorny holly on a frosty winter’s morn,
Then watching the Nativity of the new child born.
Friends and lovers kissing beneath the mistletoe,
Christmas trees with baubles and candles all aglow,
Twinkling silver fairy lights in trillions of homes,
Little Christmas helpers such as Polar bears and gnomes.
Tiny robin red breasts chirping their winter song,
White Christmas on the radio, church bells that go ding dong.
Soirees and party frocks with matching shoes and hose,
Bucks Fizz and pink champagne both wrinkling my nose.
Festive lights being turned on by middle aged pop-stars,
Roaring fires crackling in snug and comfy bars.
Christmas cards suspended around the fireplace,
Next to woolly stockings now struggling for some space.
Drinks spiced with cinnamon and lovely warm mulled wine,
Mince pies and stollen and bowls of scented pine.
Ribbons and adornments entwined around the gifts,
Snowstorms and snowballs and peaky soft snowdrifts.
Sitting by the fireside roasting marshmallows,
With the one who loves me warming my pretty toes.
Christmas cake with marzipan laced with sweet cointreau,
Adorned with little snowmen tied with a silver bow.
Halls decked in tartan to welcome all those dear,
Bearing gifts wrapped lovingly with name-tags written clear.
Goose and all the trimmings served on a golden platter,
And guests who are amused by witty social chatter.
‘Oh come all ye faithful’ sung by every choir,
And the Poinsettia plant is the Christmas flower.
Prayers are read at Midnight for countries still at war,
For far-off lands in turmoil, the sick and very poor.
Merry Christmas Everyone ...

Love the rhyme, love the warm feeling reading this gave me. A truly spirited poem, which was a joy to read. -
Wondrous images abound in your poem. I wish I could take part in such a Christmas!
The fireside and the cake caught my fancy the most!

There seems to be a lot of nostalgia here, at least that's how I read it, kind of sad, somehow. Yet also warm and glowing and filled with love. A beautiful read, all the best for the contest.

what a wonderful picture you have painted with your sable brush. It takes in all the concepts of christmas that we now enjoy but remembers in no short measure that there is suffering in this world, even at Christmas...A lovely piece written by a lovely lady if you don't mind my saying so...Good luck in the comp...Dan...

Mmmm...Christmas cake with marzipan laced with sweet cointreau - now THAT's a Christmas cake to remember!
So many yummy things here - pink champagne, minced pies, roasted marshmallows, christmas cake, goose & trimmings - GOD I'm hungry!!!
The only thing I'd add to round out your yummy imagery would be a nice bowl of warmed egg nog & spiced rum!
It's funny how your physical or emotional state of being at any given time somewhat dictates what jumps out at you in a poem!
I should probably go have breakfast!
On more important topics, the rhyme and rhythm are superb in addition to the well-crafted imagery. For me, the best flowing and my favorite stanza would have to be stanza 2 with the metaphor of the fairy lights and the wonderful image of Santa's helpers - polar bears and gnomes - WONDERFUL! Good luck in the contest!

Ahh your imagery surely brought me into this Christmas scene. Can I come to your place
It's making me *sigh* in wonderment
You give us all that pretty imagery and then hit us with a stark reminder at the end that none of us should forgrt!
My best wishes in this contest
