A peasant girl from Spain
My name is Maria Luisa.
I have dark hair, olive skin, and brown eyes. I am ten years old.
My mother, she looks like me.
I love her, my father, and my puppy.
I feel hungry and sad and I am scared my mother will die.
I need her to be well again. I need my father to be strong for her. I need to be strong.
I would give up my food, my blanket, and my soul if it meant she would be alright.
I am afraid she won’t get well again. I am afraid God will take away my family. I am scared I am going to die.
I want my mother to be better. I want the world to be better. I want to see my baby brother again.
People are dying here, in Spain.
My full name is Maria Luisa Marcos y Covas.
Author notes
A project for World History Class. To write a poem about someone during the Black Plague. I was given a slip of paper with the words "A ten year old peasant girl from Spain, 1353". The instructions for the poem were:
Line 1: First name only.
Line 2: Four traits that describe that person.
Line 3: Sibling off...Son of...Friend of...
Line 4: Lover of... (3 items)
Line 5: Who feels...(3 items)
Line 6: Who needs...(3 items)
Line 7: Who gives...(3 items)
Line 8: Who fears...(3 items)
Line 9: Who wants to see...(3 items)
Line 10: Resident of...
Line 11: Last name only.
My teacher said I went above and beyond the assignment.
Does that sound gloating?
I hope I got Spanish naming conventions right.
Critique me please? I mean, really critique me. If you didn't like something about it, for the love of a deity, TELL ME. I can take it if it will help me get better.

I love the prompt for the poem and I think you did a great job. The only thing that had me wondering was whether at that time in that country people had puppies especially peasants who likely did not have much food for themselves, even more so for a pet. Just a thought though, and it could be that they did have dogs then.
Nice write

More than likely the puppy was a stray she sneaked food out to.
Thank you for the kind review. -
