Zombies

Missing image
You know what I love?
Zombies. Horrible, bloodthirsty zombies. You
know, like the ones from video games
that come out at night (no sun
for them) and eat the last
of your brain supply. So flies

will eat your rotting corpse and then fly
away so you, my love,
can die in peace at last.
But of course you
never do; instead, the sun
rots your skin and you join the game.

It's not a complicated game;
just kill and don't be killed. But since you can't fly
and you can't go out in the sun,
you and your lovely
clan of the undead must hunt your
supper under the cover of darkness and hope you last

through the zombie-human war that is raging. You want the last
ones standing to be zombies like you so you win the game
but it's not that easy. You
must stay away from flying
cow monkeys and hope that your loved
ones in the human world stay safe under the cover of the sun

so your zombie friends can't touch them. The sun
hides the humans and helps the human race to last
longer than it would otherwise. So hopefully your loved
ones will win the game
and stay alive long enough to fly
away from you and your

zombie comrades. So pack your
bags, puny human beings, and leave while the sun
is still up; jump in your rockets and fly
to the moon so your species can last
past nightfall. This game
will be won soon and it won't be by the humans, my love.

Away, away! Fly to that rocket of yours!
Be safe, my dear love; the fate of the human race rests in the light of the sun
and it won't last long! Be gone or lose the game!

Author notes

Words given: love, you, game, sun/son, last, fly
This is written for a class using words that my peers chose on a day that I was absent, hence leaving me with no choice whatsoever as to what words I would structure my poem around. I thought the words lent themselves to a lovey-dovey sort of poem, though, so I decided to write something as opposite this concept as possible. My teacher seemed to like it, at least. =/
This was influenced somewhat by the game of Humans vs. Zombies being played on campus at the time. For more information about HvZ, go to http://humansvszombies.org/about.
The photo, by the way, is an edit I did myself of a picture that I took of my boyfriend.

    Welcome to AllPoetry!

I really enjoyed this. While it may just literally be read as a scary story of zombies, etc, it also has the ring of underlying metaphore about the tendency we humans have to allowing ourselves to be kept in the dark to follow blindly in the same old zombie fashion of those who have already been sold a pile of, well fly fodder

I loved your honest comment about criticism. Do keep in mind though, that there is no need to change a poem even if it receives a critical comment. Criticism is often just a way to see how a poem is received by individual readers. I rarely change a poem that I have posted based on comments unless it is a typos or something. But I like knowing how people interpret what I have written even if they don't get it at all.

Still, I loved the poem so I really have no criticism anyway

Once more, welcome to AllPoetry. Feel free to kick off your shoes and make yourself at home. Let us know if you have questions.
