She'd loved him since childhood
yellowed pages lay witness, nine years old
when he'd come to play with Simon
her older brother.
I'd opened her diary
awakened a love story I'd never expected
found myself mesmerized
by the intensity of her feelings.
No hesitation did I detect
in carefully penned emotions,
wonder if she cared who'd read them
or that through all these years;
I came along to tell her secrets to.
Her love went deeper, she wrote
wearied more than any words could say
the weight of such a burden,
the bitter ache
David was killed during the war
body was never found.
this tragedy engulfed me;
the loneliness of his passing
questions, her ensuing rage
how unfair to be left without him
to raise a son in his image,
all on her own.
She never married again.
Haunted.
She was haunted.
Page bottoms held tears from long ago
washed ink into tiny ponds
dried in rippled outline; indelible.
I had no answer for this emptiness
this howl of utter loss,
so I closed the diary
to honor them instead.
Closed it soundly,
this testament to a love
not fulfilled
inside this lifetime.

This was so heart wrenching and such depth went into it. You did an amazing job with this poem. Keep on writing. Thank you for allowing me to read your nice work.

This poem did two things:
Made me cry for the depth of her love
made me realize what poetry is... it is this

Jin! This is amazing and so.... heart-wrenching.
It's like an unfulfilled version of The Notebook. Actually, there's a movie with Ethan Hawke you might like called "Snow Falling on Cedars" about a love torn apart by World War II.
Wonderful write. Thank you so much for sharing!

This is really good. The poem is very vivid, the story is easy to follow. Your writing had me drawn in to the story, wanting to know where it would go next. Sadly, it was a tragedy, but a good one nonetheless.

Bountiful~Beautiful...
I have enjoyed the reading of "the old diary" for its contents and subjects dealt to full picture; for its imagery and and sentiments.
The second word of the penultimate line should be read as "TESTAMENT".

This is a poignant and haunting reply to such depths of sorrow as became obvious, Jin. I think you've honored the love and grief quite well with this penning, Sweetie. Wonderfully done.

You have captured a story that needs to be told.. One of many a grieving woman who has lost her love in past wars..Masterfully penned, capturing the emotion, and the revealing of the secret diary and letters makes this such a moving
