I stayed up all night reading words uttered
from the lips of the only person
who ever truly touched my soul.
No, caressed it.
And yet he is the exact same person
I denied repeatedly out of pure timidity
and lack of courage.
C is for Coward.
If one believes in predestination,
then I suppose you could say I was damned
from birth to a life of
fear.
I am a ship safely docked at harbor,
too afraid to sail into the open,
tumultuous sea.
Gazing longingly at the horizon that I
so desire to reach.
My virgin sails flap anxiously in the breeze,
just as a puppy whimpers to be released
into nature.
However, I hold both the key
and the lock to my own cage
in the palm of my hand.
And my grip does not budge
nor falter.
I try to grasp you from the highest point on my boat.
I climb and climb and climb
until I reach the top.
My hand outstretches as far I can stretch
but you slip through my fingertips
and fly along with the wind.
You are no longer mine.
I am no longer yours.
