Hands

Missing image
Tightly clinched in pain or stress
A gentle touch or soft caress
Tender pats matched with a smile
A warm handshake that will beguile

Precise enough to throw a pitch
Or nimbly sew the finest stitch
Skilled enough to create art
Or operate upon a heart

Strong enough to wield a club
Or gently give a soothing rub
Hard enough to give a slap
Or soft enough to gently tap

Pluck a thorn and pull a weed
Then plant a tiny flower seed
Lift a pen to write a book
Bait a bright sharp fishing hook

Calmly touch to ease a fear
Wipe away a hurt one’s tear
Arrange a bouquet in a vase
Speak to the deaf with fluid grace

Warmly tucked into a glove
Holding another that they love
But blessed of all these gifts so grand
Is offering a helping hand

Oh this is very lovely and it describes many wonderful talents that hands can perform! I like the final line about helping others being the greatist gift our hands can bestow. Your poem is beautifully constructed. Thank you for entering the contest on hands!

  • That's beautiful. A lot said for something we don't think much about very often. I have on occasion marveled at how much one can carry in just one trip!

Our bodies are often over-looked as the miracle they are. Thanks for bringing it to the fore-front.

This was awesome. I always enjoy your poems, that are so mesmerizing to me. You managed to cover almost anything that we as humans can do with our hands. Sculptors would often leave off the hands of their sculptures because of their difficult complexity. However, you have managed to sculpt their magic prowess with words. Amazing job.

Your poem about autumn was lovely, but it is this one that feels like an "I'm back" from you, with the wonderful rhythm and rhyming you offer in all your rhyming pieces, and the soft message to stop and take another look at the things in life we take for granted.

    Beautiful!!
