49'ers

I watch as my garbage goes up in value.
While dumpster rats tear apart
and pick through my plastic blue trash bags
for five cents deposit bottles
and semi-precious medals
I may have foolishly thrown away.

They’re the new prospectors
dragging and pushing four wheeled burros
from one trash can to another,
staking five-minute claims.
While panning for these new versions
of gold nuggets,
The streets are now aliened with.

this is something that appears to be very "american" iv seen on tv and read in books, oviously reality! i guess uk has its own "dumpster rats" we call them "rag & bone" but they just want your old scrap metal, washing machines and any other crap you leave out that they may get cash for, which like the comment below says they are providing a service in their own rite.

The new prospectors, panning for tin. Great stuff and a valuable service they are actually performing.
