THE phonecall

I got the phone call today
you know the one
the phone call
the one where someone rings
to tell you
someone you care about
has only months to live
there's nothing anyone can do
we just have to sit and watch
as they slowly fade away
eaten from the inside out
how are you supposed to react?
what are you supposed to say?
what is the correct response
to the phone call?

This is a sad, touching write and you put the reader in the moment. The ending of the poem captures the confusion and sometimes strange reactions we have.

Just a thought, but I wonder if the last line would be better if it read "to a phone call like that." Just my $.02 but I think the feel and flow might be a tad better.

    Nice write.
