The Wisdom of Children

I am now wary of the wisdom of children.
It takes my unawares and pins me to the earth
They pepper me with questions I cannot answer.
Without showing myself to be a fool!

They assault me with their innocence.
They reveal to me my contradictions.
In the way I think, in the way I reason
Why did I not realize these faults myself?

I will not say, “Because I said so.” or
“You will understand when you are older.”
Because it is my duty, without doubt,
to give them a rational answer.

Why did God make them so wise
so as to see me in my foolishness.
It's quite humiliating to be tricked,
by the wisdom of children.

Can you relate to this piece?

    Yes...

It sort of creeps up...like the way you once ran along side them, and let them win, and then, sometime, they turned into little sprinters, and the question of beating them does not arise. But there is no dishonour in being out-reasoned: to have fought the good fight on the use of reason, whatever spiritual views one may have, that is good enough.

    PS L.2 me, surely?

Welcome to the world of children Bob. I am a great grandfather now and have been caught out many many times. It is quite amazing to have one's own shortcomings highlighted by such innocent, smiling little faces. Great write to which I can so easily relate.
